Staying in 200s, Even at Nadir

This is odd. Catee's blood sugar is staying around the mid 200s even at nadir. I took him to the vet this week and got the blood results. Vet said he is healthy nothing showed up on the blood test except he does have some sugar in his urine. He also has a skin condition, his fur has turned black and oily on his back.

I have him at 1.6 units. His eating has been off the last few days but he is back to eating Purina DM Dry. Which is what he has always ate and never had a problem.

Would appreciate some advice. I really need to get his sugars down as it has been above 200 for awhile. It is nearly like the insulin has stopped working???

Okay thank you. Hate this for him. He was doing well with low dosages and then went up. Not sure why and the Vet isn't either. Vet told me the same thing as you.

I agree with Sue. Hopefully, upping the dose fairly consistently will help jolt him out of the higher numbers.

Quite a few diabetic cats have chronic, low level pancreatitis which will raise glucose levels.

There is a specific blood test for pancreatitis which must be done in a fasting state.
It should be described in the Pancreatitis Primer in our FAQ section, along with other useful information.

Well, he is going down at nadir but really jumped this morning to 334. I up his dose to 1.8 units. Is he bouncing? Really concerned about him.

We need more info - the blue last night was very nice - but you don't know if he might have been lower earlier or later than that. Today, can you get a number around +4/+7/+9 and see what his curve actually looks like? When does he start down, when and where is he lowest and when and how fast does he start back up?

Your amps is a pink, not a yellow, but is only 40 points higher than yesterday. So my guess is that he is just running in the yellows or near yellows and blues most of the cycle. But today's numbers would let us know that for sure. If that's the case, then you could probably up the dose a smidge.

You are always running to catch up with the dry food in the equation and there may be a limit to how low you can force the numbers while he is eating higher carb. Or it may be possible to give enough insulin to counter it. I just don't know. I haven't worked with anyone who had to continue feeding high carb while trying to get in low ranges.

Hang in there Dany it'll get better. You're doing your best for Catee and that's what matters. Things will get sorted out. Granted I'm new so I don't have the knowledge and experience of the ladies here, Sue might be onto something with the food. With my cat dry food can mean a difference of 100-150 points.

Thank you all.

Yes I can go ahead and run a curve on him today and see how his numbers are running.

I appreciate the help as I know most people on here don't keep their cats on the dry food. I wish I was so lucky... I even bought another bag of Young Again for him to try. He just really dislikes that food now... I don't know why as he done so good when first diagnosed.

I will post again when I get the curve.

Oh. I just saw your note that he won't eat can food, my apologies. If nothing else I can offer support and positivity!

Have you tried the Evo dry? Most of my cats like it. There is also Natures Variety Instinct kibble. The chicken flavor is 12% carbs. A little high, but lower than the DM, I think. I've also seen some posts about Origen Epigen chicken being low carb, I don't know about it though.

Thankfully, I've been able (fingers crossed) to wean him off of it, but Murphy was eating Royal Canin glycobalance dry for the first 2 months -it has carbs but supposedly low glycemic index carbs - I really don't think it had THAT much impact on his BG numbers. The other good thing about it is that it is lower in calories than the other dry and has fiber. Evo and Young Again and probably the others are very high in calories (~ 600/cup) Evo dry seemed to increase his numbers (every cat is different) but I've had pretty good luck with Young Again - If you call the Young Again 800 number, they will send you a few small bags for free -
