Hi everyone, I am taking the plunge and starting Rupert on Levemir tomorrow. I am at 4 U of Prozinc and my vet said to start with 2U of Lev. My vet was not even aware of Levemir as a choice for diabetic cats. I asked about switching doses on the Lantus/Levemir forum, they answered, but left it up to me. "Gulp" Guess I will be conservative at first and go with 2 Units. What do y'all think? Guess I am looking for some moral support, a little nervous about the big switch! :nailbiting:

I have no experience with the dose switch, Lynn, but I think it's a great idea.

The things I do know are

Levemire is completely different - in terms of how it works, how it is dosed. If I were you, I'd print out the protocol so you can keep referring to it.

It probably won't be an overnight change. The depot needs to fill, so usually it is a week or so before you start to see how it is actually going to work.

I wish you the very best. You have worked so hard to give Rupert the best life possible and this is another step in that journey. All fingers and paws crossed!

Sharon 14 made the switch a couple weeks ago so you might ask her for help/ideas.

I have read and printed out the protocol for levemir and I understand that dosage is based on nadir not preshot, but golly I am feeling a bit scared. I was comfortably confused with ProZinc at least! lol

Sharon has helped me already, thanks again for that Sharon! I am going to be conservative for at least 3 cycles and see how Rupert reacts with 2 U.

Thanks for the well wishes and all your help in the past Sue, y'all haven't seen the last of me on the PZI forum! :bighug:

Lynn,
Lev and Lantus do require a different mindset than Prozinc, but you'll do fine.
There are a lot of folks over there that can help.
Off the top of my head, Marje/Gracie, Sienne/Gabby and Wendy/Neko are three good go-to people.

Good luck Lynn. I can't wait to see how Rupert is going to do on Levemir. I hear ya regarding knowing Prozinc and now learning a new insulin. I am sure you will do just fine.

Priceless and true! Oh Lynn, you are brave and a good bean for plunging into something new for the good of Rupert. Wishing you the best on the Levemir. Golly, this isn't goodbye, heck the LL forum in only one above Prozinc. You can run but you can not hide! Fingers and Paws crossed for you ad Rupert! :bighug::cat::bighug::cat::bighug:

Hi Lynn, I agree start with the lower dose. You can go up if/when it's necessary. Did you decide between SLGS and TR? I think both have you hold the initial dose for 5-7 days to let the depot build. Good luck, and see ya over in L&LL!

I am still trying to decide, maybe the moderate TR? See you over in L&LL and thanks!

Never goodbye and thanks for everything Bobbie! I have to come back to PZI just to see what Bubba is up too! :bighug:

Gosh, I am getting teary here, *sniff, sniff*, thanks so much for all your well wishes and support! I have to admit though, that I am going with PZI one more day, I have enough insulin (wasn't sure before tonight) and it will give me more time to study up on Lev protocol. Someone (Julie), suggested going with 3 U of Lev, I might be brave and do that. Not sure...maybe....arghhhh! :banghead: I feel like such a newbie again! lol

Lynn! I wasn't here last night to wish you well, but I'm so excited for you! I think the switch will be great. I know it's terrifying to change insulins and go to a forum full of people you don't know and try something new...but it will be great! Just think, soon you'll be able to give people some really great info about the differences between insulins!

You definitely better come visit or we will have to come find you in the L&LL forum and drag you back for a visit!

Ditto from me, drop in for our " Getting to know you threads"

I will for sure join the "Getting to know you threads", they are so much fun! I also like knowing how all your kitties are doing, so " I'll be back" (said in my best Arnold Schwarzenegger voice)!

Thanks Rachel, I sure hope this will help Rupert get some lower amps and pmps numbers. He isn't too bad during the day, but guess the PZI just isn't lasting long enough. We will see how the Lev does, thanks for all your help in PZI, I couldn't have done it without all the great people here! :bighug:
