Starting Prozac - blood sugar concerns?

My sugar kitty Faraday has been dealing with inappropriate urination for a while now. We’ve had him seen at the vet, worked closely with them to treat for potential idiopathic cystitis (turns out, didn’t seem to be that), and a number of environmental modifications to try and eliminate the behavior. No dice.

We’re going to start Prozac on Monday. Has anyone noticed any changes in patterns with blood sugar following Prozac treatment? Faraday’s blood sugar numbers have been great and very consistent, and I just want to mentally prepare for potential changes!

At least in humans, Prozac is helpful can be treating both anxiety and/or depression. To the extent that Faraday's behavior is driven by anxiety, his numbers may drop a bit. However, I've not seen a change in diabetes management in humans. One thing to be aware of, though. Prozac has a long half-life. What that translates to is that it takes much longer than you would expect for it to reach a blood level where it's working at maximum effect. Be patient. It can take 6 - 8 weeks to see an effect in humans. A cat's metabolism is faster so it would take less time than with a human but it will take weeks.

I tend to think it's like any medication. There are individual differences. I would keep an eye on Faraday's numbers.

Cali - are you aware that with TR you are able to reduce the dose if Faraday is in normal numbers for a week? Also, have you tried giving Faraday a "snack" at around +8 or +9? The food may help to drop his pre-shot numbers a bit. (My apologies if this is all something you're tried.)

The vet is going to wait a month before making any further decision regarding dosing.

Regarding going down in dose for insulin, we’ve tried a couple times to reduce his insulin, but he doesn’t hold the reductions :-(. I’ve been waiting for numbers consistently under 100 to try reducing again.

We did try the snacks to push numbers lower at preshot when we were at lower doses, but it didn’t seem to make a difference.
 
I have now and have had cats on Prozac (Fluotexine). They do very well. Admittedly, they are not diabetic. Prozac can be constipating in some cats, so I would just watch his litter box for that. I hope it helps.
