Starting Lantus tomorrow

Finally got the shipment from Marks Marine Pharmacy (super quick considering it came from Canada, but a week is a really long time when you're impatient haha!), so Spot will be starting Lantus tomorrow. He's been on Prozinc for a year, and his numbers have only been getting worse recently, so I decided a change was in order.

He's starting out on 1u BID and I plan on using the TR protocol. I have read all the stickies several times over and am just really excited to get started!

Hey there and welcome! Please start a new thread tomorrow with the date, Spot's name and AMPS. Add 1st lantus cycle so some eyes can be on you.

I think you will like the result with Lantus. We were on ProZinc for 6 months and switched and I am so glad we did.

Hope the Lantus works really well for Spot!
We started on Vetsulin and got nowhere. It took a while to get Scooter regulated, but I could see improvement almost right away with Lantus.

Good luck with the Lantus, I think most people who've switched are happier with it.

By the way, normally we take the dose of the previous dose into consideration, instead of starting back at the beginning with one unit. Since 4 units got him into just blues with Prozinc, I'd start a dose much closer to 4 units. Maybe 3 units if you want to be conservative, you can see how going back to 2 units of Prozinc was too little juice for Spot. A little bit of my history, my girl was seeing blues on 5 units of Caninsulin/Vetsulin. I started back at 1 unit of Lantus. Big mistake! Took me months to get back to 5 units and I ended up going even higher.

@Wendy&Neko I definitely have thought about what you’re saying. My concern with starting so high is that I suspect the Prozinc may have been losing its potency toward the end. It’s really only the last couple months that the dose went up so drastically, before that he was under or around 2u. I’m just terrified that he’ll be more responsive to the new insulin and hypo while I’m not home....

Are you testing regularly for ketones? If not, I would with such a large jump back. You could be more conservative and start at 2 units and be prepared for some quick increases.

I do check his ketones regularly and I just checked again - he’s negative.. and he is currently eating very well and not otherwise sick. I don’t see that much of a difference in his numbers between the 4u a few days ago and the 2u he’s on now - in fact I think his numbers are a bit lower now. He’s no longer spending midcycles over 300 like he did the last couple days at 4u. I really don’t know why that is. It could be the insulin is bad, it could be that he needs more of it, it could be he was bouncing a little but was otherwise fine at 4u... but because I don’t know I’m really not comfortable starting any higher. I’m not trying to be difficult, and I know I’m probably being too cautious. If he is too high on 1u, I’m definitely prepared for quick increases, and I’ll make it a point to check his ketones every day until I start to see lower numbers.
