Hi guys,

I don't have alot of faith in my vet so I defer to all of you for opinions on how much Lantus to start on Monday morning. We are on Humulin N now.

Could you please take a look at our SS and let me know. I'm pretty worried about changing but our chart shows we need to use something not so harsh that would be longer lasting.

Thank you so much for the help.

((((Myla)))) Hello there friend. I am sure some of the more experienced members will come along and offer some advice. I just wanted to welcome you to Lantus Land. :YMHUG: Between now and Monday go ahead and read up on some of the basic's of Lantus. They really come in handy ;-) I will post the links below, but you can also find then at the top of this forums lists.

One things about Lantus is that is takes time for the insulin to build up in Purrcie's system before you start to see some good patterns. Lantus has a way of acting my building of a reserve "shed". Links below

Welcome Myla!!

From what I understand, Paige has provided you with the intensive orientation to Lantus Land (LL) -- in other words, you know to read all of the sticky notes at the top of the board and to commit them to memory -- there will be a test (just kidding!).

One quick question -- do you know what Purrcie's ideal weight is? One way to determine starting dose is based on weight (dose = .25 x kilograms ideal weight). Often this comes out to somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.0u unless Purrcie is very big or very little.

Looking at Purrcie's SS, I'd probably lean toward 1.0u just so you are starting perhaps a little lower than is needed. We can always bring the dose up a little more quickly if needed.

I'm sure a few others will be by and offer some input.

It would also be very helpful if you could complete a Profile. The instructions are in the Tech Center. Having a Profile means you won't keep having to answer questions about diet, medical history, etc. that we will pester you with.

Oh thanks about the profile, I will do that today. Purrcie should weigh about 11 lbs but he has lost weight this last few months with all of this mess. He is 9 lbs now.

Based on ideal weight, the calculation is 1.22 but given the weight loss, I think 1.0 is safe. If you can monitor closely, you could go for 1.25u. Let's see what some of the others have to say.

Question about ideal weight

I feel stupid asking, but I'd be even stupider if I didn't....what exactly does "ideal weight" mean? Is it what the cat SHOULD weigh? Meadow was once a robust 12 lbs. But she is now 8lbs. She was chunky at 12 lbs and is skinny at 8, so is her ideal weight 10 lbs? Tried looking at all the sticky info, but I can't seem to find an explanation of what ideal weight actually is.

welcome to LL, Myla and Purrcie (what a cute name!). I agree with Sienne that 1 unit seems like a good place to start. My other vote is to go ahead and start Lantus today, no reason to wait until Monday (unless that works better for you, for some reason).

yep 1u is what I would do. takes a while to shed up so do not expect rapid results unless you have a weird kitty and does not follow the rules  we have some of those, ya know.
welcome aboard and see you in august :-D

Hi again, this link will explain a lot about that plus give you the method to calculate...plus lots of pics and visuals of ideal weight

Morning!
After figuring out a glitch with Google documents I now have Purrcie's profile set up. Today is our last day on Humulin. I really wanted to start Lantus today but I was afraid that if he did have any kind of adverse reaction, with it being a Sunday, it might be a relay bad idea. The closest 24/7 vet hospital is either down near Pitsburgh or Monroeville and either one is a ways away.

Dian do you know anything about that vet hospital on Northern Pike Rd. off 48? http://www.avets.us

As for the glitch in Google documents, as of around June 10th or so, Google's default setting is for the new version of Google documents and that no longer has the option to edit html! So you have to go up to settings and uncheck the default setting under document editing to not use the new version of Google documents. Otherwise you lose the ability to edit html any new documents you create.

So now that we have our profile, could you guys take a peek? It sounds like 1U will be the way to start tomorrow but I want to make sure.
The countdown has begun for blastoff to Lantus Land.

avets is a 24/7 emergency care place. I suspect they are pretty good but as in all 24.7 places, very expensive. there is a regular vet next door that I have dealt with through friends pets and mixed feelings there. just had an experience with a friends cat and they in no uncertain terms told her she was killing her cats by feeding wet food had her in tears, cat bit vet and the told her if this was a dog the would PTS. cat had a uti and the treated with topical steroid and not sure what antibiotic. was waiting for her to bring me paper work. they are also on the higher side of $. I would not take my cat there for RX for diabetis. if you are happy with your vet and they will give you RX, then stay there and just follow the advise of the folks here. hell, my vet still thinks I am using BCP PZI, I switched a long time ago and handle everything on my own. they go there for dentals and whatever minor I need done, I care for mine and 2 fosters through this board. period. avets is just over he hill from me. about 10minute drive 15 if ya hit the lights
