Stan Glargine Review and Dry Food Question

Hi, I haven't been on in a while, so I hope this is where I post a new question! I'm hoping Stan's updated spreadsheet as of 2/28/24 shows up in my signature. I haven't asked for advice since November when I reduced Stan from .75 units to .5 units. I know I should be testing more often, but based off of his latest test numbers, can anyone tell me if .5 units still looks good?

My second question is about the dry food I settled on...Wysong Epigen 90 Starch-Free Dog & Cat food. I assume it's good because of the low carb count? Also, we leave food bowls out all day because we have 5 other cats who aren't diabetic. The compromise of leaving food out is that everyone switched to Wysong so that we don't have to worry about Stan grazing. Just verifying that this is an ok practice.

I just thought of another question...Stan uses so little insulin that the bottle is still almost full at the end of each month. How long can I safely stretch it out? Could I get by with dosing him from the bottle for an extra month? Thank you!
 
Glargine should be good for 6 months if refrigerated except when drawing out the insulin. To reduce wasting the insulin most of us the insulin pen and draw the insulin out where the pen needles go. Using the pens results in having to discard little if any insulin when it losses it effectivity.
 
I've never been able to get a 10ml bottle of Lantus to last more than a month. It just "pooped out" by then which was evident by higher bg numbers. Human diabetics can use up a 10 ml bottle quickly in a month because they need much larger doses than a cat.

The Lantus pens are better to use for cats. A 3 ml pen can pretty much last to the very last drop which may be months away. Ask the vet to write you a prescription for the pens. I think you can buy single pens now instead of the box of five pens. Use a pen the same way you would with the bottle: insert insulin syringe needle into the rubber stopper, draw out insulin, remove the insulin syringe from the rubber stopper, gently squirt air bubbles and extra insulin out.

I don't know about the Wysong food. Maybe @Wendy&Neko or another member knows more about that particular dry food.

Thank you :-) We actually do use the pens, but at just 2 unit per day, it definitely lasts a long time! With our last pen, I thought that it had gone bad around the 2 month mark because it had a really strong smell (the acetone smell). I could smell it as soon as I took the cap off, so I was worried about using it for that long. It wasn’t even cloudy.
 
I used pen refills (cartridges not available in the US) to the last drop, which was about 90 days. The strong smell might have been a drop of Lantus on the pen?

The Wysong Epigen 90 isn't available in Canada, as far as I know. That's where I am. But I think I've heard people describe it as low carb before.

As far as Stan's dose goes, I have no clue if it's too much or too little insulin. The dose being too low could cause the higher numbers, but so could a bounce from going into low numbers. No one here will be able to answer the question about dose without more test information. Sorry.
