hi everyone i used to be a regular here a few years back when i adopted homer as a special needs diabetic. good news is homer is doing great and is in permanent remission after testing and giving insulin for a year or two when i first got him. i think i've had him for eight years now. one of my other cats, banjo who i adopted off of this board eight years ago because he was diagnosed as diabetic but really wasn't now has stage 3 kidney disease. i'm just trying to understand the best way to treat this particularly diet. i know they advocate a low protein diet but i've read about others who say that protein is ok if it is of high quality. if anyone has any advice or helpful info i would be greatful. he is going in on friday to check blood pressure and he is anemic too. so just want to get the best course of treatment for my sweetie pie. thank u!!

There's a link to a support group from Tanya's Site. The members are very knowledgeable and may be able to give you further advice on diet.

Hi Julie,

I'm sorry to hear about Banjo's diagnosis.

As others have suggested, the 'Tanya' website is a fantastic source of information. And there are some very experienced and supportive folks on the support forum. I became responsible for a CKD kitty in November, and honestly do not know how I'd have managed without the support forum. They helped me stay sane when I was new and scared.

There is also a book available (based on the CKD website). I find the book incredibly useful and easier to read than the info on the website (and I can mark the pages I find most useful).

CKD is a complicated condition and there seems to be an awful lot to take in at first. You've already discovered that there is some debate about whether 'prescription diets' or 'higher protein diets' are the way to go. I opted for the latter. But if you do opt for a higher protein diet you may also need to use phosphorous binders in the food; whether you do that or not will depend on your kitty's blood phosphorous level.
My kitty was slightly anemic at diagnosis but that did resolve soon after; possibly because of the Vit B supplements I gave (as suggested on the forum for all CKD kitties). But if the anemia is more severe it may need additional treatment.

Blood pressure control is also vital. If the BP is high and isn't treated it can be very dangerous indeed.

Keeping everything crossed here that Homer has long and happy life ahead of him.
Good luck, Julie! :bighug:
