So I picked up the baby food squash and canned pumpkin. Not sure which to give him. He's has a very soft, kinda runny stool (probably due to the different food types, but could be the IBD). Which one (squash or pumpkin) would be better for the the stool issues and nausea? He is at 17.5 pounds, about how much should I give him? I am calling the vet tomorrow for a prescription, but would like to try something tonight to see if it helps. He has been eating again (has had 1 wholecan of Friskies and 1/4 of another since midnight last night). YAY! I think he still has a nauseous tummy though....

I don't know which for nausea. Actually, I haven't heard that pumkin or squash will help nausea. I take about 1 flat measured tablespoon of baby food squash and put it in a bowl and heat it for 10 seconds in the microwave and test it when I take it out to make sure it's not too hot. I then add some FF (about 1/4 can) and stir it up for a special treat (J.D. likes his squash). I use it to soften J.D.'s stools.

Well... we certainly don't want his stools softer! That would be a disaster!!!! Maybe I should just wait until tomorrow to talk to vet. :?

Squash and pumpkin are good for constipation; I've never come across anything that says they're good for nausea.
Cerenia and Zofran are good for nausea, and Pepcid can help calm down a tummy :-)

Both squash and pumpkin are good for both constipation and loose stools/diarrhea, but I've never heard of it doing anything for nausea

The fiber will soften the stools in case of constipation, and pull water out of the stools when it's too loose.

1-2 teaspoons for a cat under 15lbs
1-2 tablespoons for over 15lbs

1/4 tab of Pepcid A/C 10mg. (or generic) can help with the tummy troubles.... you'll need a prescription for Cerenia or Zofran

The "odd" advantage of anything with fiber is that it can be helpful for EITHER constipation or loose stools. However, it does nothing for nausea. For nausea, what you do really depends on what the cause of the nausea is. If it's acid stomach, Pepsid/famotidine can be helpful. If it's from other causes, you'll need a prescription from your vet. Cerenia (maropitant) may be a better choice than ondansatron (Zofran). The latter is used primarily as an anti-emetic (for vomiting) although both drugs are effective to combat vomiting. Cerenia was initially developed for car/motion sickness in dogs.

Actually, squash and pumpkin are supposed to work well in both directions...softening when needed, and firming up when needed.

Yay for eating better :-D !!!! I hope his tummy settles soon!

Sorry that you are having poo and nausea problems  Have you tried slippery elm bark at all? I know it helped my kitty with both and I think I read it can help IBD but I'm no expert on that. (Now I have to give Pepcid AC for stomach acid from kidney disease as per my vet) I give pumpkin or squash to help along the poo issues. I do the same as Dyana and mix a tsp of it a bit of the food - maybe I should try it heated up a bit too:)

That is golden! Thank you, good to know!
My cats love sweet potatoes, but with all these veggies I'm afraid they might have a lot of carbs. Does anyone know if that's the case?

Thanks for all the info! Good to know I can use the pumpkin or squash. I think I'll try the squash since it's in a smaller bottle.

Hardey (as usual) is determined to make me look like a fibber today. He's eaten 1 1/2 cans of Friskies in the past 21 hours. I hope it continues. :)

If you ever decide to use pumpkin, you can freeze the leftovers too....just put what's left in an ice cube tray and freeze. When they're frozen, dump them in a bag for use when you need them

Just make sure it's 100% pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling

Good luck with the squash!!
