Several years ago, my sister's cat, Spunky (Orange Tabby), was dx'd with diabetes. She knows, of course, first hand of the work we've done here caring for diabetic cats among our special needs cats in the Catnip Cottage. So, although she's never signed in here, I guided her through diet, insulin, home testing, etc.
Well, Spunky just celebrated his 21st birthday. He was a small kitten when they adopted him from their local shelter, so they know his age is accurate. I don't remember exactly when he was diagnosed; I think about 4 years ago. At his annual vet checkup he had gained 2 lbs and was at his glory weight of nearly 12 lbs! His vet as astonished at his continued overall good health and at the fact that he'd gained 2 lbs this year. She said that she's never known diabetic cats to gain weight.
This gave my sister the opportunity to educate the vet how the dry diabetic food they'd prescribed was still too high in carbohydrates and talk to her about canned low-carb food and home testing (which she demonstrated) in conjunction with insulin. Spunky is regulated on 1 unit BID now (originally he was getting 6-7 units BID and was still unregulated!) .
Her vet told her that whatever she is doing, she's obviously doing right. This gave my sister a great chance to educate a vet who was very interested in learning the secret to this success.
Stick in there, Newbies...
This stuff is tested, proven and can work!
