Spike in BG - so frustrating

Gus spiked up into the 400s and it has been so frustrating. The vet isn't sure what has caused this. I gave him a little chromium picolonate which brought him down to 232 - the first 200s in almost two weeks. Of course he is just going back up and was in the 400s again tonight.

He has dental issues which I'm going to take care of, but the vet doesn't believe that's the cause because she said he has a cavity but not an abscess. Either way, he can't have his dental until he has his echocardiogram which is scheduled for next Wednesday. I also got a urine sample sitting in the fridge which I'm taking tomorrow to have them test to make sure he doesn't have a UTI.

Can I just say how frustrating all of this is. We were going along pretty well and then out of no where this happens. Sometimes this is all so overwhelming. I got so upset a couple days ago that I started crying on the phone with the receptionist at the vet's office.

Sorry you are going through this and all I can offer is that infection can raise BG's. This will bump up your post for more eyes...hang in there.

edited to fix lame spelling :/

I know how you feel.

a few weeks ago Annie had a full 24 hours of really good numbers, and i was so excited, then BAM! her numbers just spiked, we took her to the vet and she had an E-Coli infection and her bladder and kidneys were seriously inflamed. So she stayed in the hospital for a couple days on fluids etc, brought her home with some meds, she's been on the antibiotics for over a week now but her numbers haven't been this high since she was first diagnosed.

Its really frusterating, because we only have so much control over the situation, and it's such a rollercoaster. All we want to do is help our kitties, but it DOES take time, and good days and bad. I've come to realize this isn't an easy fix, and with an older cat like mine, there are going to be problems along the way that will set back our progress, but as long as i can keep Annie happy, maybe not perfect, but happy, then i'm ok with that for now.

Did Annie act like she felt bad?

I thought about a UTI and took a urine sample to the vet this morning. They neglected to tell me it couldn't be more than 12 hours old even though I had kept in in the fridge. That was a huge waste of time. Now I have to decide if I want to try and get another urine sample or take him in and have them do it which is very painful.

I also meant to say I'm sorry you are in the same boat. It sucks. I am glad they figured out what was wrong with Annie. I think Gus's numbers spiked when he was on antibiotics before. I think they can increase the BGs, but don't quote me on that for sure. Hopefully she is done with them soon.

When Annie feels bad she hides under our bed. That's her tell tale sign.

Yes, some meds can spike BG's, but there is a discrepancy as to how much it takes for that to happen. Annie was on prednilosone for her Pancreatitis and her numbers spiked during this time. Everyone told me that prednisone meds will spike BG's, but i expressed this to my vet and he said with the small amount she is getting, it shouldn't do that. so who knows really!

Urine samples have to be brought in fresh, in one of the containers they give you, and they can't be kept in the fridge or it will skew the results. Also, the urine can't be taken if she is on any meds as that may skew the results as well. The process they use at the vet when they take a urine sample is not painful to my knowledge, but even if it is, i'm sure it's no more painful or will make her feel any worse then she probably does already. It will only last a few seconds for them to get the urine sample.

It really sucks when their bg numbers spike for more then a few days because that tells us something is going on, and it's up to us to narrow it down to what. but patience really is a virtue.

It was very easy for us to get a urine sample.... the vet gave us a plastic tray that kinda looked like an icecube tray but not as deep, When annie peed we slipped it under her. You can also use a ladle, and then pour it into the container after. You do need a substantial amount.
A good sign it's a UTI is if your kitty is peeing anywhere but the litter box or blood in the urine.

Have you had Gus checked for Pancreatitis or Cystitis?? Having an Ultrasound done is really a great thing to do once you get the money for it. It's a little pricey but it will show you all of her insides and if there's infection or swelling etc. If we didn't have one done on Annie we would have never found that her bladder and kidneys were so inflamed that it could have killed her.

Poor Annie sounds like she has it as bad as Gus. Gus has triad disease and yes - we had the ultrasound. We are getting a second echocardiogram next week to see if his heart disease has progressed or not.

Yes - I used the ladle and they said I could use tupperware as long as it is washed. They didn't offer up any trays like your vet did.

Gus has been hiding off and on, but with the fireworks, it is hard to tell if he is sick or just freaked out. He has played and run around the apartment. He also went out for walks on his leash and wanted to stay out - until the fireworks started and then he wanted to hide.

Today was a good number: 260, but who knows what it will be tonight when I get home. My fingers are crossed very tightly hoping for good news.

I'm sorry Annie has so many medical issues going on. It does suck. The inflammation thing really sucks because most treatments involve things that have negative side effects. It's really frustrating.
