Hi this is Tiffany and spaz, we are having trouble trying to figure out a good dose. I feel he has been dropping too fast on both a.m. and p.m. is shot I drop the shot does tonight because I thought that he was getting too much thought it would reapproach it but then he starts dropping on the p.m. shot with the smaller dose. Also gave him high carb on both a.m. and p.m. to slow down the drop

Any thoughts ideas was I reacting to fast please help Tiffany

Hi Tiffany,

I think his numbers are looking great. We generally consider a cat regulated if they are in the lower 200s at pre shot and in double digits at nadir. He is really close.

Once regulated, then you can work to slower lower his numbers. We don't worry about low mid cycle numbers until they are below 50.

For right now, it looks like a little less than .75 is a good dose for him. And it is encouraging that the Vetsulin is lasting 12 hours.

I was curious why you've varied the dose so much? I usually wait a week on a specific dose, then do a curve before deciding whether to changes doses. Then again, I know there are different ways to approach it, and I'm using Lantus Glargine for insulin and my cat is still eating some dry food.

Aly, Vetsulin is dosed very differently than Lantus. The preshot and nadirs are both considered, not only the nadir. As Vetsulin is an in and out insulin and the cycles do not overlap, you don't shoot at low preshots, but instead you lower the dose if you get a low preshot. Some cats do well with holding a dose; others do well with a sliding scale. A sliding scale is not used with Lantus.
