Hello everyone I am back but this time it is for my sister`s cat Sox he is a 9 year old DS black and white beautiful boy. He was DX 3 weeks ago but he has been loosing weight for the pass few months went from 18 to 13 lbs. He has just finished meds for bladder infection. His BG was 23 she took all dry food away and he is now on can pate. Did you know Science Diet had a new can diabetic food out chunks covered in gravy...Not good. Well talked her into doing this so now need your help getting him into remission :-D
Vet gave her the insulin Lantus and 3 units every 12 hours give me shivers to think what could have happened. When to her place and gave her the crash course ...good think she is going to home test but she is very nervous about it but she will do it at least 3 times a day for now. We started him on .5units start slow and his PMPS was 344 +5 237 Amps 196 .So this is day one Thank you beautiful people Hugsssssssssss Kath & Trey and cousin Sox

Hi Kath.

Welcome to Sox and your sister. Please ask her to at least test four times a day - two PS tests and two sometime midcycle. Many cats go lower at night, so it's really important to check them then, too. 3 units is a very high starting dose. She really will need to keep a close eye on Sox. I hope she will join the Board and read all the info here and chat with us. We would all love to help her and Sox.

Welcome to FDMB.
We highly recommend reading over Cat Info, written by Dr Pierson, and downloading the foold list for reference.

Sox is only getting .5 unit not what the vet ordered....guess you missed that part Tricia & Cinco ...thank you BJM will pass that on Cat Info....and thank you Liz :-D almost feels like old times but I am not doing any poking or at least very little Trey wishes everyone tons of healing green light and beautiful safe smooth journey to the Falls.....:-D Kath

Hey, Kath!

How good of you to lend a hand and moral support to your sister and Sox. I agree with Tricia, can you sister get in 2 pre-shot tests and an additional test each cycle? It already sounds like Sox may be dropping into lower numbers at night if his AMPS was in the blues!

I hope your sister will post. You know we'll do whatever we can to answer her questions.

Sorry, Kath. You're right - I did miss the .5 part. I just saw that 3 units and alarm bells went off. Why do vets do that??? Never mind, I know. So frustrating. I'm glad your sister has you to help her through this. Nothing better than having someone with the knowledge and resources needed when you face a scary challenge like FD. :cat:

Welcome Kath! I'm a "new" oldie here....Gobbles went into remission 5/2013 but decided the other day that he just wasn't sweet enough; thus, he is back on Lantus.....he's such a brat. THANK GOD you intervened--my gosh, 3 units for starters !!!!

Hi Kat welcome back I had to do that last April and for over 7 months we only used .25unit to start and worked up to 1 unit for about 3 weeks and then for about 6 weeks he was at .25 unit or under till Nov.1 he said ok that's enough .He is remission for the second time my beautiful Special Trey. so never give up he was OTJ for 4.8 years then back on for about 7 months he is 3 months OTJ. My vet told me I leave it to you start .25u this time last time for 3 weeks she keep telling me 3 units twice a day...and don`t home test but I stood up to her and she now starts with me anyway wonder what she tells others. Wishing you tons of healing green light to get into the green and OTJ again

Hi Sienne & Gabby still trying to get this new forums set up down.I find it very confusing but will get it.....When I get it figured out maybe able to get my sister on it as for now I will be her voice. Sox could have had a bounce his PMPS was 392 +3.5 he was 189 Marje is helping me set up the ss so hoping she can get it fixed ....I am not great at this

Hi Kath, and welcome to your sister and Sox. Your sister is very lucky to have your experience to guide her. The new board is a bit confusing at first, but it has so many good features. I like it better than the old.

Ella & Rusty

Hi Kathy - nice to see you back again! Although i'm sorry for Sox sake - but YAY that you're there to help your sis out. Hopefully your sister has seen that your dedication with Trey resulted in him getting regulated quickly and OTJ again. I hope she'll grab the bull by the horns and jump in whole-heartedly.

Great to have you helping your sister, Kath. I hope Sox can get into remission with a canned diet and a little insulin.

Note: the numbers on the SS are not correct right now. We had a technical difficulty but it's sorted out and the numbers were a test. Kath will update with the correct numbers soon.
