Sorta health but also behavior question

Raja is my diabetic baby she's 16 and I adopted Meeko 2 yrs ago when she was 6 weeks old. I had her spayed when she was about 6 months old and had her checked for everything under the sun and got her all of her shots

Tonight I accidentally stepped on Raja's tail and she let out a loud I'm hurt meow. I picked her up to cuddle her and Meeko runs into the room and starts attacking me! My legs are torn up, it took a while to stop the bleeding and there is one place that she got me really deep. The others are all semi deep...not like a normal cat scratch but not as deep as the other one. She also in the process tore up the pants I was wearing. I grabbed a hanger (all I could find to defend myself) to fight her off the best I could because she went after me 4 times and chased her under the bed. After taking care of myself I decided I would feel safer locking her out of the bedroom tonight. I walked out into the kitchen and she sorta slinked after me and I walked into the bedroom and shut the door, leaving her out in the living/kitchen area. I had to go back to the kitchen and shut the doors behind me and she raised all her fur and made this weird meow sound and was really jumpy with me. I'm pretty terrified at the moment and was careful not to make any sudden moves.

There really is no place to hide out in the living/kitchen which I'm sure is part of the problem now. So do I leave her out there and lock Raja and me in the bedroom or do I open the door and let Meeko hide under the bed? I would hope she wouldn't attack me in the middle of the night but with how she's acting even 2 hours later I'm hesitant to let her near me.

I got the Tdap shot 2.5 yrs ago and I know the T stands for Tentus so then I'm good to go on that right? No need to get a booster shot now? Should I talk to my doctor about antibiotics since the scratches/bites are deep? It's really going to be hard to cover myself in bandaids. The deepest bite/scratch probably could have been stitched up but the skin is missing so I don't see the point in going to the er. Meeko and Raja are inside cats, they don't go out except on my 2nd floor balcony

dang girl! that's nuts! think she was trying to protect Raja?

i think if she's still all freaked out i'd probably keep everyone separated for the night and hopefully she's calmed down by morning.

and as far as your wounds, not sure. i think tetanus shots are good for 10 years? i got a very very minor puncture wound from Mousie this morning when i was stupid enough to try to pick her up and ended up picking up $50 worth of antibiotics tonight because my wrist got swollen, red, and warm today

That's my guess too, she was defending Raja. Meeko has NEVER acted like this before.

The expensive doctor bills is what I'm afraid of, I think I will call my doctor in the morning but I'm sure he will want to see me....25 bucks for the visit and 30 a pop for the meds.

I hope your wrist gets better soon, infections are never any fun.

ALWAYS clean any cat (or dog) scratches or bites with peroxide as quickly as you can. There are toxins in them that the peroxide will kill - if you can clean them before those toxins get into the surrounding skin, there will be much less if any infection.

I don't have any suggestions for the cat situation - mine just run to the hurt one....

hugs,

Oh, Heather, how awful to go through that with Meeko. I bet she was trying to protect Raja. My husband said to tell you that we had a similar experience a number of years ago. Our cat Souli had a seizure condition, and during one of her seizures, my husband grabbed her to hold her. Our very large cat Bob came running into the room and attacked my husband. He was quite vicious. He'd always been very protective of Souli. When Souli was having a seizure, Bob would rush to her side and sit with her while our other cats were running away. Cats have an amazing capacity to look out for each other.

Do you have any Feliway on hand? That always seems to help calm things down in our household. Take care of your wounds, Heather...hope they heal very soon.

Thinking of you today,
Eva

I didn't see this last night, but if you clean the scratches immediately with peroxide and keep some neosporin on them while they heal, there's no need to go to the doctor. If they are really deep scratches use some butterfly band-aids to keep it together so it doesn't leave a scar. If you're up to date on your Tetanus shot then there's no reason to worry about lockjaw.

Keep a very close eye on ALL of the wounds. My diabetic kitty, Stinky, bit my 3 y/o son on the ankle & I immediately washed it out w/peroxide, then put Bactroban on it. (Bactroban is prescription strength antibiotic ointment--I have Bacitracin, but this bite was deep.) Less than 48 hours later, the wound had become an abscess w/quite a bit of pus, and the whole ankle was swollen & red. When we took him to the doctor, the doc said he suggests antibiotics for ANY cat bite b/c they tend to "go bad very quickly." He does own cats himself, so he doesn't mean minor cat bites when they barely nip you. And no, my son still doesn't leave Stinky alone: "I yuv Stinky, he's a good boy." Stinky: "Grrrrrrrrr...."

Heather

I would go to the doctor and get some antibiotics. The wounds sounds nasty and cat bites and scratches can become infected easily. I did a bit of rescue work a couple years ago and got a bite from about a 8 week old feral kitten and how to take Cipro.
So please don`t let that go.
I did however see something similiar on a you tube video where there was a woman watching a toddler and the people had a couple cats, anyhow I don`t know if the kid screamed or what but one of the cats came out of the bedroom and attacked the babysitter.
I mean this cat kept attacking this woman, it was exactly what Meeko did to you it sounds.
Maybe google( you tube cat attacking babysitter) and see if you can pull that video up. It was scary I never seen a cat do that before.

Thanks guys for all the responses

Meeko was still pretty skittish today, any sudden moves on my part caused her fur to raise up and she was really jumpy but she didn't go after me anymore.

I put a bandaid on the deepest cut and woke up this morning and the pad on the bandaid was soaked with blood. It was one of those kiddie bandaids so I went over to my grandmother's and cleaned it all again with some peroxide and put neosporin on it and one of those huge bandaids. All of the scratches/bites are swollen and painful and I did call my doctor. She told me to put neosporin on it and keep it covered. Of course this had to happen at the end of the week so if it gets bad I'll end up at one of those emergency clinics. The deepest wound is still bleeding, though not gushing but I just peeked at it and there is what looks like a green section on the skin next to it. It's on the back of my leg right below the knee and I just can't exam it all that close so I can't tell if it's just a bruise or worse. I'm really pale and I bruise easy and it always looks worse than it is I just can't tell if that's a bruise or infection.

I understand about being pale! My hubs is a red-head, and I'm more pale than he is, though all 4 of us are so pale we can act as our own nightlights. Honestly, if it's swollen & there's even a question as to whether or not it's green, I would go get some antibiotics. Better to have them than to get worse over the weekend.

If you go to a clinic or er they will prob give you a tetnus even if you had one a couple years ago...they always update after "an event."

would definitely get it checked out, i learned the hard way after getting bit by a dog last yr (i know its not a cat but still a bite), in my head all i had was a puncture wound but i ended up with massive bruising on the inside of my leg and an infection, i am the type of person that doesnt go to the dr unless its a major issue, i waited a day and ended up getting a infection and was on a high dose antiobiotic for a week. you wont know you have an infection possibly till its too late, and to this day i still have problems.

and my cats do the same thing (minus the attacking) if i accidentally step on a tail the other one comes running in sniffing the one hurt.

Ok this morning I woke up and put hydrogen peroxide on it and apparently I'm now allergic to it because it burned and bleached my skin anywhere it touched so I decided it was now the time to go to the doctor. Went to an urgent care clinic and he first gave me augmentin and after arguing with him he gave me something else and sent me on my way.

lucky you! no augmentin! i was on 2100 mg a day for 3 days and then 1400 for the remainder of the 7....will definately be talking whatever dr out of that if there is another next time.

hope you start healing soon!
