Hi everyone my first post. My cat sooty is nearly 10. He has asthma controlled with Ventolin and diabetes controlled with royal canin diabetic food , which both work well , but now sooty has developed a very ichy skin hes scratching a lot and is covered in scabs . Im off to the vets tomorrow but im thinking diabetes dermatitis ?? Any ideas .

Welcome! When you say that Sooty's diabetes is controlled with Royal Canin diabetic food do you mean that his blood glucose numbers are in a good range from that food alone? What are his numbers?

The itchy skin sounds like an allergic response and if Sooty is on Ventolin he's obviously prone to allergies. Diabetes can lead to poor coat condition but extreme itchiness isn't that common.

Yes his blood glucose levels are controlled by the food . Now levels need checking but last time im sure the vet said the levels were fine.

Why will Ventolin cause allergys ? Its worked wonders with his asthma and without the need of steriods .
Sorry if I was unclear. What I meant was that if you use Ventolin, you have an asthmatic cat and asthma is an allergic response. I didn't mean to suggest that Ventolin causes allergies. :)

Did the skin problems start when you changed diet?
The type of skin problems you describe are frequently due to food allergies.
I would try changing diet

Hi Sandi thanks for asking. Sooty was at the vets friday and its nothing to do with his diabetics , he has flea allergy dermatitis so at the minute he has a plastic collar on to stop him iching and has had a antibiotic. Hes quite a big cat so we have changed his flea treatment to Advantage 80 for large cats.
