Sonny (diagnosed yesterday at 559) spent the day at our vet. My understanding is he was given one shot (don't know how many units) of Humulin and within an hour was down into the 300's. He is eating and drinking well, no longer wobbly or staring into space (well...any more than a geriatric cat does anyway). When I picked him up, about 9 hours after his shot, he was 87 or 89, and ready for dinner! He's now resting nicely, purring, and half-asleep. He's not out of the woods and goes back in the morning for a few hours. He would normally be hospitalized, but our vet knows we'll call him immediately if anything isn't right and he's the kind of vet that would come into his office in his pajamas to save an animal. We don't know if Humulin will work long-term for him, and we will also be implementing diet changes after he's more stable, but he responded so well today we're very optimistic.

Glad Sonny is home! That is a long cycle for Humulin, which usually means a high starting dose. Are you planning to give a shot tonight? If so, did the vet give you a number under which it was too low to shoot? 200 is ours. If he is over 200 but in that range, it would be scary to give the same dose that was given for the 500 range.

Our many experiences with diabetic cats under the past 13 years is that insulin should be given twice daily. If not and on a high dose, often the cat swings from very high numbers to low ones - which feels awful according to human diabetics. Is your vet is planning on 2 shots a day?

No, we're not giving a shot tonight. He will give a shot in his office first thing tomorrow, then watch how he responds. The plan is to do 2 shots per day. He just didn't tonight because we're still seeing how he responds. My guess is he needed the higher dose because his BS was so high, but as it comes down, we'll give a lower amount twice daily.

It's not perfect, but at least he responded, his numbers are good and he's comfortable. We'll see as it goes.
