Sometimes the pokes go well, sometimes they don't

Hit a vein tonight. I hate it when I do that. I really don't do it much, but when I do its such a mess and its all I can do to not tense up and freak out on my little furry one. Honestly it seems like she could care less , other than being a little annoyed by the dripping blood...eeeeew. She just seems like she's wondering what the hold up is on her post test treats. She doesn't run from tests, she runs to them because dried chicken is always a part of it. Little longer pressure than usual, and no more drips. Here's to a more coordinated mamma tomorrow morning

well then as long as she's ok with it your doing great! no problem. your new to the VAMPIRE CLUB so give it time, you'll be a pro before long.

Sya is incredibly calm and tolerant to this whole thing...far more than I am I'm sure. As long as the freeze dried chicken bag is somewhere in the vicinity and she gets some before and after, she's a happy camper. I guess I'm pretty blessed in that department. I just wish I didn't have to cause her pain...even though I know its good for her.

Are you talking about the ear sticks? I am two weeks into the BG testing. I must have hit a vein tonight too, blood was everywhere. I thought I was going to faint. I guess it takes time and practice. Good luck with your furbaby.

Yeah. When you hit the vein it gushes. I've only done it 3 times so far since March since she was diagnosed, but I hate it...(guess she does too). Its so grose and she feels the drops I think and shakes her head and the drops fly everywhere, which is even groser. Still, it stops if you apply pressure and at least for mine it hasn't made her averse to testing or anything. Still it makes me feel like such a monster when I do it

To me the worse part of Spaceys diabetes regimine is the BGs, but I know they are necessary. Do you ever have to re-stick if no blood appears the first or second time? I have had to do this a lot in the past two weeks and it really does get to me. And I feel like a monster too. lol

If I shaved my kitty's ears and rubbed them with a dye you'd probably see so many pokies you might want to take the lancing device from me! Rufus' ears don't like to bleed very much - I need to get over to the D.T. to get some toddler socks or something and make a rice sock for him. (It's been a while since there have been any in my house, lol) He tolerates it well enough, but NOT when he should be getting breakfast! I've yet to hit a vein, but at least reading this lets me know that if/when I do it'll be OK. I can see that freaking me out pretty easily.

I find that usually if I have to re-stick I didn't actually hit the ear or it deflected. (I use a lancet pen). I find sometimes if I stick and then just wait a few seconds (assuming her highness allows it) a drop will appear. I haven't been using the rice sock lately as it has been pretty warm here, but I am sure this fall/winter it will come out again. Interestingly enough she has decided she prefers to be standing up now when I do it, and actually it seems to put her ear at a better angle for me. (who says our kitties aren't the most clever at figuring out what we're trying to do?) Anyway, this AM poke went much much better. Nice itty bitty tiny micro drop...just like I like them :-D

Yeah, when they talk back it just emphasizes how we don't like having to do this. Sya has meowed a couple of times when I did the insulin, but not the ear pokes...other than to say "Where's my chicken?" The way I figure is that if they're not fighting it and running away when its test time, the meow is just their version of ouch, and even if their ears aren't as sensitive as our fingers I am sure its at least a little bit of pain. I can't help thinking that Sya thinks that twice a day Mom bites my ear and then gives me a delicious treat. What a wierd life for a kitty.

That just gave me a chuckle, Sya. LOL Blackie gets poked quite a lot, unfortunately. I've switched her insulin to Lantus, and she's been on it since July 25th. STILL trying to get her regulated. I swear that she's my little science project. LOL Poor baby.

Yeah. Trying to get Sya's numbers into more decent territory myself. I've had her on Lantus the whole time, but she's a bit porky, so its taken higher doses to get her numbers down. Finally feel like we're starting to get somewhere in that the urine frequency has dropped as well as the volume of urine...so I figure thats a good sign. Working now on bringing the weight down a bit...feel like I can finally do that as she's not frantically hungry anymore.

oh geez.. i probably shouldn't have read this post (have done just two of the blood tests, still haven't started the insulin).

Sounds like you handled it great though!

Thanks (maybe LOL)

They really are telling the truth...it does get easier. I never thought I'd be able to do this...though I do know Sya's personality has played a major role in the fact that I can
