okay- so PK is back to his 150 to 180 PS numbers...caught a 300 mid cycle a few days ago- but that was expected as he peaks at PS-ish.

Last night, I was distracted at meal time and accidentally put down a plate of Friskies canned for PK and gave PK's raw/SK mix to Timothy....The friskies is higher carb than the raw, but is not gravy or whatever...

anyway, this AM I got a 99 and that was 1.5 hrs EARLY! ...so, +10.5 was 99....

so- how do you explain LOWER bg's on HIGHER carb meal?! :?

Thanks

I dont know if this is accurate but when Pippin has been low enough for a while it seems his pancreas heals and starts sputtering so when I feed him he can actually go down because he is producing some of his own insulin. Thats my theory anyway.

Well, the first thing would be to find out if the results are reproducible - could have been a fluke or coincidence.

If reproducible then I would look at other ingredients as possibly making it easier to digest, or digest more slowly - something like that.

Another thought, related to what Deb posted, is that maybe the pancreas needs a certain amount of carbs to trigger the insulin response? Or maybe his pancreas saw more carbs than normal and was able to respond to them this time? I don't know.

Maybe Pamela would have some thoughts about this in relationship to the typical overnight "fasting" insulin response after the pancreas has rested and rebuilt its insulin supplies....?

I agree about the reproducible part and the rate of absorption as maybe being a factor. Try it again. But I will say that when I feed Tigger LC canned food his numbers go down as well. But that is not enough to make me want to switch off of raw. I know that transit time for raw food is about 3 hours (depending on the cat) and dry food is around 11-12 hours - not sure where canned food falls in there (sorry no link - I will look for it on the old board later).

Also, just food for thought and again (sorry) I will get the link later, Dr. Greco says that protein is the stimulus for insulin release in cats (unlike humans).

Anyway, I am not sure how much all this falls on just the pancreas and its reaction to food. There are a lot of other factors involved too such as gut hormones. So maybe for a cat that has IBD or other gastrointestinal problems the transit time and/or how they digest carbs/fats/protein/fiber is different for them?

Also gastroparenthesis (spelled wrong - sorry in a hurry) that happens with diabetics. Jess went into this back on the old board.

It would be great to have a full discussion on this sometime. I had a similar one a couple of years ago with some peeps on another board but since we were all just lay people all we could do is speculate and brainstorm. Anyway, what we did come up with is that there is a lot more involved than just the pancreas and its reaction to food.

That is what I was referring to, Pippins meals are all protein, chicken turkey and egg. Felines are obligate carnivors the same as ferrets so I wondered if what applied to Pippin might also apply to felines.
Its something to think about and research and discus further maybe.

That is sure true! Otherwise.... this would be easy! Beings of all types need to come with onboard computers so you have hook them up and run diagnostics.... sigh. Wouldn't that be great? But what would be do with all out new-found free time?

Hey, Deb - what is in Pippin's "soup"?

I cook about 5 pounds of dark chicken meat (thighs mostly) a pound or so of ground turkey and debone. I add a couple of cooked eggs and some of their Evo kibble soaked in warm water. The whole mess goes into the blender till smooth(ferrets hate chunks LOL) I add a supplement called Nupro, extra calcium, fish oil and if necessary some canned pumpkin and freeze it in containers.
The 6 of them eat twice a day with Pippin eating every 4 hours during the day, they get about 2 ounces a meal and that recipe lasts us about a week.
