Hi there...

Scooter has been acting a bit "off" these past few weeks. He was OTJ for all of a month in July, back on insulin since August. I have been doing my best to keep up with shooting him, but I lost my job and ran out of strips, so he didn't get tested for a while. Thankfully I got some strips from DCIN on wednesday. I also am not sure if the Lantus has quit working or not as his cycles have been erratic and flat although his numbers have not been too high. I am going to try using my last vial next.

Anyways I dont think his behavior is diabetes related. I have noticed the following-

1. He yowls and cries a lot, for no apparent reason. I will be at my desk in the living room and he will sit in the hallway and cry cry cry. He also does it a lot at night and wakes me up. He is sitting behind me meowing right now. I tried feeding him and he's not hungry. This is what's concerning me because he's never been this vocal ever before. He will stop for a while if I talk to him and pet him.

2. He gets these brief periods of extreme energy - he woke me up at 3am a few nights ago burning around the house and clawing up the carpet.

3. He will get this "look" on his face.... his pupils will go really big and he will look extremely alert/agitated... "bugged out" if you will. Sometimes I think he's chasing bugs or something but it seems random.

I have done a bit of reading and these are some symptoms of something like hyperthyroid or high blood pressure and I am scared ****less to be quite honest, i dont know how i'm going to pay the rent next month, let alone take him to the vet and do blood tests. DCIN can only pay half of vet bills now too. I don't know what to do..

Yes yowling at night can be a sign of both of those. My Andy used to do that yowl at night. One day his pupils got huge and would not go back to normal, when I took him to the vet they told me I would have to rush him to the ER vet for a certain medicine through IV. If he did not get it his retina`s would deatch and he would go blind.
He had high blood pressure. But I have heard thyroid can cause this yowling at night as well.
Hope you can find at what is causing this.

Hi Ry,

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I'm unemployed, too, and I understand how stressful this is. Is there a VCA Animal Hospital in your area? At least at the ones in my area, they accept Care Credit:

Maybe you can see if there's a vet near you that would accept this?

I was actually just at the vet yesterday getting some blood work done for my Moritz, and I explained to them that I was unemployed, and they let me pay a portion of the bill now and a portion of the bill in a month (without having to sign up for Care Credit). Maybe if you explain your situation to your vet, they'd be willing to let you pay some or all of the bill later, or pay in installments?

Good luck! I'm sending warm thoughts to you and Scooter!

Some vets offer lower rates for rescues or based on income...

Also, the Care Credit allows you to pay the costs over 12 months at 0% interest. So even if you have, say $1000 of some intials costs and tests and etc. you could in theory pay less than 82/month to cover it with CAre Credit. They only charge you interest if you are late with a payment, or if by the end of the period you have not paid it off.

good luck

No they don't take payment plans/Care Credit... seems like not many vets here do.

I don't know what I'm going to do. Scooter's doing OK but he still meows a lot. I am going to try calling some other clinics but it's really really hard to get to the farther away vets because I don't have a car and last time I took the taxi it was $22 each way... frustrating...
