I was musing before about certain things Dweezil did or had experienced in the past that may be meaningful to the Diabetes diagnosis now.
1. He used to get FLUTDs as a younger cat (not exactly UTIs and not crystals, but inflammation etc of the urinary area) and would always get antibiotics and ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (STEROIDS). Is there a belief that steroids can cause Diabetes in cats? Way back when he was experiencing this (he has been FLUTD free for many years now), the vet did mention he had a slightly elevated concentration of glucose in his urine, but that it was not cause for concern. He never mentioned it again after that, so we assumed everything was ok, and it probably was. Until now, of course.
2. He also had anti-inflammatories when he had his cornea scraped and his nose operated on (he used to scratch and rub his eye and nose several years back for a few months on and off due to a mild skin irritation, and it became a compulsion for him). More steroids.
3. He used to LOOOOOOVE licking my arms and ankles / feet, and would always try to lick where my perfume was. I never, ever let him because it's clearly not good for cats - alcohol, fragrance, etc. But he always wanted it. I assumed because it was sweet smelling. Could this have been some kind of early indicator of Diabetes?
Any thoughts about your own kitties?
