Hello all.
I posted a day or two ago about how snuggy had been vomiting in the night. We have been to the vet the past 3 days and here is the update on our Good King Snugglewumps:

Snuggy's blood work (second set) confirmed an extremely high white cell count. The second test showed 44,000 indicating some form of immune system response. All other labs came back normal - showing NO pancreatitis, liver issue or kidney problems.
The ultrasound, however, gave us some bad news.
Snuggy's intestines are extremely inflamed. This could just mean inflammatory bowel, but the presence of multiple reactive lymph nodes is more indicative of some type of infiltrative cancer. His liver, kidneys, and pancreas all looked to be within normal limits.
Lastly, a blood test showed that snuggy is FIV+.
When he was tested at the shelter, it came back negative, so this is either a false positive OR he contacted it while at the shelter (according to the vet).
Today (currently) we are at the vet giving another blood sample to confirm or debunk the positive FIV result.

I'm feeling heart broken. In only this short time snuggy has become a prominent member of our family and has wormed his way deep into my heart. The thought of possibly losing him so soon is devastating. I pray it is NOT cancer, and the FIV is a false positive.

This poor little guy has been through the ringer and at only 10mos old deserves so much more than what it looks to be coming.

Fingers crossed....

Hello all.
I pray it is NOT cancer, and the FIV is a false positive.

I pray the same, be well little Snugglewumps :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Just a thought...has Snugglewumps ever had a FIV vaccination..at the shelter or with you. If so then kitties will often test as positive for FIV antibodies, which will give a false positive reading depending on what kind of test they use. Here is more information on that:

So sorry to hear Snuggy is going to have some challenges in his life, Sarah, but we all know you'll love him and do the best you can to keep him comfortable and as healthy as possible.

FIV isn't a death sentence at all....My mom has an FIV+ cat that she adopted at 8 months...Miss Kitty is going on 15 years old and has never had a problem. A good diet and keeping their immune system as healthy as possible can give them many years of good quality life

Sure hope the cancer scare is just that...a scare. IBS can be handled (as many here can attest to)

Sending tons of good vines, white light and prayers that Snuggy has many more years to share his love with you!

thank you all for the great support. After a good cry (and I'm sure there will be more to come) I'm feeling a bit more in control of the situation. Snuggy is still acting completely fine - a total kitten. He loves to play and pounce and eat, eat, EAT! his numbers are still in the mis 300's pre shot - i haven't tried to get more mid day numbers in because of all the trips to the vet and blood work... i don't want to stress him out too much.
earlier today i contacted the vet he saw when he lived in Virginia and they are faxing his records to my local vet. they weren't able to tell be if he had been vaccinated for FIV due to confidentiality, but I'm hoping my vet will inform me that he was and that is why the FIV came back positive. and I'm still praying so hard that it is Inflammatory bowel and not cancer. the thing that is making me nervous is the multiple lymph nodes they saw on the scan. I'm unsure why they would be reactive unless there is something more serious going on....
@Chris & China , you are right - my goal was always to give snuggy the best possible quality of life for however long he has. I want him to know love and family and home in his lifetime.
so, while we anxiously await what is next to come, we lay here in bed, watching How I Met Your Mother and having LOTS of chin scratches (his favorite).
goodnight all.:bighug:

Mamacita, the mom of the Garage cats, is FIV +. She's doing great. FIV is transmitted through deep bites.
You could have a PCR blood test done to rule in/out the FIV.

They drew more blood today to run the extensive test on him to know for sure. Said they would send it out for a western blot as well. So we will see in about a week when it comes back...
