Hi everyone! Happy Friday!

I received my Solostar Pens today and they came in a hot box with everything that was supposed to keep it cold....hot. Are they bad? nailbite_smile

Do I keep all of these pens in the fridge? Or, do I only keep the one I am currently using in the fridge?

Once I puncture one, how long do I have to use it until it expires?

I am assuming that the others are good until the expiration date until I first puncture them..?

Thanks!!

There should be a temperature range that the pens should be stored in. If they were not within that range, I would contact whoever shipped them and let them know. It's entirely possible that the insulin will not be effective.

What about once a pen is punctured, the phamplet states NOT to keep in the fridge however, I thought I rememberd someone saying to do the opposite. What do you do with yours?

I keep mine in the frig. Lantus will last 28 days unrefrigerated but in the frig it lasts a lot longer. I have used a pen for a couple of months or so. I just went by her #'s. If your still getting #'s that are the norm for Smokey than just keep on using it. The unpuntured ones will last until the expiration date on the package.

As far as are yours any good. Look to see if there are any floaters in the insulin. It should be clear. When you say the package was hot do you mean inside? I'm with Sienne and would call where you got them and ask about the package being hot. After all it isn't cheap.

Good luck.

I've been looking into ordering the pens from a Canadian pharmacy, too. Unfortunately, the pens are shipped from Turkey and it's impossible to ship them from that far away and have the ice packs remain cold. I had already made the decision that I'm not going to order until the middle of winter just for that reason. There is one pharmacy I called who has the pens for $110 if they're shipped from Turkey and $160 if they're shipped from Canada. The other pharmacy I called only shipped from Turkey so that's something you need to ask when you order.

Also, the reason the instructions say not to refrigerate the pen is because when it is used with humans, the special needles that attach to the pen are used. Because the pen is pressurized, refigeration screws up the accuracy of the dosing when using the special needles. Because we don't use those needles, we use our own syringes, we refrigerate the pen and have no problems. If you refrigerate the pen, you will very likely be able to use most, if not all, the insulin and not have to throw any out. Of course, that's if the heat during travel didn't ruin it already. I think I'd try to get my money back because I just wouldn't trust it. You can print out a $25 coupon on the Lantus SoloStar pen website if you decide to buy new pens at your local pharmacy.

Denne,

I guess we posted at the same time. Lantus is made for humans. Humans use it up a lot faster than are kitties do. It is made so humans can just take it with them and shoot where ever they are, no need to refrigerate. But punctured it only lasts 28 days out of the frig. I'm not sure why they say do not refrigerate, maybe they are saying it's just not necessary. I have been using the pens for awhile now and keeping them in the frig and they have been fine. Maybe because it doesn't have to be kept in the frig yours isn't bad, especially unpunctured. I'd call and have them explain it to you. Hope this makes sense.

Let us know how you make out.

Oh, your kitty is so cute! I've always kept my vials in the fridge, but this is my first pen and it's telling me complete opposite on the package.

For the Solostar it says:
Un-opened - Good until expiration date
Opened - Good for 28 days but, DO NOT refridgerate - leave opened at room temp.

For the vials it says:
Opened - Good for 28 days, and DO refridgerate

I think we all were typing at the same time!!

Thanks Patty, that makes sense. I called the canadian pharmacy and they said that a pharmacist will return my call on Monday.

Can you return medication? I'm under the impression that I'm going to be stuck with these things!

Read my post above for the reason why the instructions to the pen say to not refrigerate and why we DO refrigerate. Make sure you refrigerate the pens, the one you're using and the one's you haven't begun to use yet.
