Solensia for pain due to grumbling pancreatitis

Hi everyone. Solensia is licensed in the UK for arthritis. It is a manufactured molecule that attaches to pain receptors to reduce pain. Do you think it will work for longterm grumbling pancreatitis?

Pabay has grumbling pancreatitis and he seems to have had an upset stomach leading to a short acute phase of pancreatitis (possible). He was treated with buprenorphine plus NSIAD anti emetic and amoxycillin. Buprenorphine in the UK will not be prescribed for longterm use. There are greater restrictions than in the US with regard to opiate control in pets.

Moreover whilst Pabay was pain free on buprenorphine he was tripping. There was no sedative affect so the dose was not too high.

He also has gabapentin for a slight arthritic condition in his front shoulder and incidentally it helps his pancreatitis but he has such a low dose it does not have enough of an impact on the pain in my view. I have tried to increase the dose but he just gets ataxia.

He was nearly euthanised on Friday because he was so poorly and we have just had a meeting with the vet today. I don't want Pabay to suffer. The vet wondered about using Solensia to help manage Pabay's pain and see if that helps his general condition. Does anyone have any knowlegde about if this would work and if there are any contra-indications for insulin users please?

Hi, so very sorry to hear that Pabay has been so poorly (((huge hugs))).

I can think of several (probably more actually) UK diabetic kitties on Solensia. And there has been no mention to date of any issues due to a cat being insulin-dependent. It does seem to be a drug that doesn't work for all cats. But it can have a very good effect indeed in those cats that it does work for. I do not know if it would work to ease pancreatitis pain...

Has Pabay been on Onsior at any point for his arthritis? That (in conjunction with occasional gabapentin for major flare ups) enabled Bertie to have an extra year of life. Just wondering if that would be another possibility....

Many thanks Eliz. It is very good to know several diabetic kitties have been on selensia.

Pabay's sister is on selensia for arthritis and it has been very very effective.

Pabay's OA is so mild the low dose of gabapentin has been very effective.

Anti-nerve growth monoclonal antibodies (which is what selensia is) have proven effective in humans for visceral pain (and cancer) in particular pancreatic pain. I think we are going to try it tomorrow after my vet has spoken to Zoetis (should be fine if no contraindications for diabetics).

You are such a wealth of knowledge and many thanks for sharing.
