socks at emergency vet

I woke up today and he was laying on the floor and I thought he was dead so I took him in. They are in big disagreement with his sliding scale and are pretty much blaming his not getting regulated on it. She wants him on the same dose now and no spot checking with me doing occasional curves. How am I supposed to give him 1.25 units when .5 in the 200s got him down to 87 with a food steer? She glanced at my SS but it's on my phone, I hope she looks at the full SS to get a better idea of where he has been.
 
Just got home from the vet, apparently he is DKA and in shock with low blood pressure, low heart rate and low temperature. So I came home with a big bill and without a very sick cat who I hope at least makes it :YMSIGH:.

She seemed a bit condescending about me doing spot checks at home and being on my sliding scale, emphasizing that I have to be on the same page with the vet and not change his dose around or do spot checks. Even hinting at the fact that this is all my fault. I emailed her my SS so hopefully she looks at it.

Well, he's pulled through from near death before, hopefully he hangs on again this time. I don't know what I'll do if he doesn't make it.
 
Vet just called, they haven't been able to bring his blood pressure up, it's at 60, they are trying dopamine I believe. I'm not so sure he's going to make it :(
 
Hi, I am sorry about Socks. I haven't been on the board in awhile, but wanted to share this with you. DKA is very tough, but it is survivable. My cat, Kitty, went DKA about 1.5 months after being diagnosed diabetic. She stayed in The vet hospital on IVs for a week before coming home. I was not sure she would make it either- but, she did and lived another 1.3 yrs to age 16.5. It takes time, but Socks can get better- don't give up.

I decided it was best to put him down. He wasn't showing any signs of improvement and the vet said she was seeing some bad neurological signs. Along with the fact that with the fluids they were hearing a very loud heart murmur which could complicate things further with congestive heart failure and they said he was breathing as if he was taking his last breaths and they got the crash cart but he went back to breathing normally. I hope it was the right decision. I'd hate to have put him down if he could have pulled through, but I went to see him and he didn't even acknowledge me and wasn't even blinking. Thanks for all the positive thoughts everyone. And thanks to everyone who helped through his roller coaster sugar dance.
 
It breaks my heart to hear this. I'm so sorry you had to go through this and face the toughest decision any of us ever have to face when it comes to our beloved pets.
Don't ever doubt yourself or your decision. You were there. You saw him and you did what you felt was best for him.

But I would also tell you this. You're vet is completely wrong with regard to your doing home tests and adjusting his dose based on the numbers you were seeing. To advise you to shoot a dose that you had seen for yourself was too high, and to advise you to not worry about spot checks? Not only is that insanely dangerous, but in my mind, she has no business giving cliets advice on insulin dosage. It borders on malpractice in my opinion. Had you blindly followed her advice, and kept shooting the doses she recommended, Socks could very well have died from hypoglycemia. And from the impression I get, she would have somehow found a way to try to blame that on you as well.

It wasn't you who needed to be "on the same page" as her. It was her job to get on the same page with you. She seems to have forgotten who pays her bills.

I'm so sorry for you and for Socks and for your family.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that your sweet Socks is gone. Please don't even consider any criticism from the vet. It would have been deadly to just give him a set amount with his wild swings. You did so much to try to help him. No one could have been more caring or diligent trying to get him regulated. He really was one of the most difficult cats I had ever seen with his crazy swings on low amounts.

Socks was so well loved and knew that you were his mom and best friend. He had a lovely place to live, with great food and lots of love. Every cat should be so lucky. I know you are in shock and feeling so sad. I hope that daily you can remember wonderful things about Socks and his life with you and eventually smile when you think of him.
 
Hi I am Ashleys fiance Brandon, I just wanted to come on here and thank you all for your support. Ashley has done so much for Socks that I cant begin to tell you. She single handedly gave him a longer better quality life. She is beyond a wonderful person who should be very proud of the way she treats all animals. We are gonna miss Socks very badly as he was such a sweet boy, absolutely wonderful family member. Thanks again I just cant tell you how much it means to me to see some of your warm supportive comments,

Thanks so much you guys, I'm feeling so torn apart right now. I'm almost in denial, I can't believe how quickly things went especially considering how good a day Monday was. I really thought Monday was the turning point, and we were right about to get him regulated. I can at least take comfort in the fact that I'll always have his ashes and the videos and pictures we took of him. But what I wouldn't give to have him sleep next to me one more time or sit in my lap and purr. I just wish he was here laying on my keyboard which always annoyed me. I miss his meow, and his beautiful green eyes and his soft fur. I almost want to go pick his body up and bring him home for cuddles, but I already spent probably an hour with him when they euthanized him and cuddles won't bring him back.
 
I'm so sorry for you loss. Socks knows how much you loved him and I know how much you are going to miss him. He will always live in your heart.

So sorry to hear about Socks. You did everything you possibly could for him and all along the way he knew that.

BTW....your vet didn't have a clue...sounded like mine. Only time I go there anymore is for syringes + insulin (when I need the second bottle). Carl said it best (post below) about vets not understanding FD.

So sorry to hear that Socks has passed. We are heartbroken to hear of the death of one of our beloved FDMB kitties.
You did so much the last few months to help Socks in his diabetes. Now, you have helped him and sent him on his way to the Rainbow Bridge.
We know how hard you tried to care for him and you did everything right. Please listen to what Carl said.
We are grieving with you. When the devastation of losing Socks eases a bit, remember the special moments you had, even the annoying ones.

He still has a place in your heart and always will.

So sorry to hear this...we always wonder if we did enough...if there was something, anything, we could have done different. When you go beyond that extra mile, it still doesn't seem like it was enough.

Your love and care is so evident. I'm so sorry for your loss. I believe Socks has landed with a pounce in the land of treats and sunbeams, whole and healthy, looking back and happy he had you for his bean :YMHUG:

So sorry for your loss. It's so difficult to return to a home where the little one is no longer in those spots we're used to seeing them. But your beloved Socks will forever be with you in spirit. Know that you did what you could, and made all the best choices and decisions you could have.

In time, your memories of happy, healthy times will return, and fill the void you're currently feeling.

I am so so sorry to hear this, sweet Socks, momma will never ever forget you. No more pain and your Momma was there with you I am sure you knew it too. He is with my Etoile that left me suddenly 4 days ago, our heart are broken right now but we will heal and have them always with us in our hearts and memories.

Thank you everyone for the past support in trying to get this difficult to regulate cat regulated and in your support in this extremely difficult time.

It was so hard waking up to my alarm clock and no Socks jumping from the window perch onto my bed to beg for breakfast. It was so difficult feeding the other cat with him not there. I want to call his name to get him to jump onto the bed for cuddles and purrs.

How do i deal with the guilt that i now have thinking i could have been more vigilant in stalking him to the litter box to check for ketones? I can't help but think maybe if I'd tried harder or been more attentive we could have caught it a bit earlier and he might still be here.

I'm at work tonight, hoping I can handle things somewhat, it's a bit difficult when you work in the service industry and people expect you to be bright and cheery.
 
First of all Ashley, NO GUILT! You were a great momma-bean. Socks knew it and we all know it. Second, the ONLY thing that will help that empty sad feeling is time. One day it will just lessen and then you will be able to think of Socks with sadness but happiness too and it won't feel as though your heart is being ripped out. I know it is hard right now.

I was a waitress years ago and I remember having to be "on" when I felt awful about something or was sad. Just do the best you can.
 
Absolutely, no guilt! Many people refuse to even try to treat FD. You spent so many hours working to try different foods and doses and learning how to deal with this disease. You did so much! It is so difficult to manage FD and stay on top of everything, especially with a challenging diabetic who never followed what we usually see as "normal" patterns.

Socks never knew he was sick. He just knew he got delicious new food and lots of treats and got lots of extra attention and love. He had a wonderful life with the two of you - there is nothing you need to feel badly about. You gave Socks your very best and should be proud of your care for him.
