With the new Relaxed Lantus ISG, I am afraid the Lev ISG is destine for the FDMB archives. Unless those of you with FDs using Levemir who believe the information we provide and techniques we have established as helpful to Levemir dose management (split dosing, micro-dosing, etc) are important continue to post here in some fashion AND bring new Levemir users to this section, this ISG will become a ghost town.
Rather than get in a debate about why this is happening, I hope we can make some suggestions. My suggestion is to reply to Health threads about not only the ISG itself, but about Levemir in general. It does not have to be advise to newcomers, but can be your personal experience using Levemir with your cat. I don't mean this to create a competition with Lantus, the fact remains that Lantus is going to be prescribed by vets more often than Levemir because there is more clinical information available to them about Lantus. Anything we can do to raise consciousness about Levemir is important.
Why do I believe in Levemir so much? Because from the very first few weeks of using it after 2 1/2 years of using PZI for Gandalf I watched a marvelous cat get his life back! That is not a diss on PZI, it can work well for some cats, but in our case I was never able to dose it TID (3 times per day) which is what Gandalf needed for it to have worked at its best.
With Levemir Gandalf's BG cycles achieved the duration his body needed from an insulin. If I had understood then what I understand now about how it worked for him, I probably could have achieved OTJ for him. But I will never know and I have to reiterate that OTJ should not be the goal for FD management, regulation should be the goal because regulation is what can lead to OTJ.
Cats are notoriously difficult to regulate, all vets know this and it is a fact which unfortunately leads many cats to be euthanized after diagnosis. I believe that Lantus and Levemir truly provide the best hope for feline diabetics since we advocated home-testing on FDMB!
I thank those who continue to post here - Marci & Klinger, Pamela & Tigger, Pam and Alley, Peggy & Mickey, Darlene & Jack, Laura and Harley and Marci and Buddy, Robin & Harley*. If I've missed someone, I'm sorry, but the truth is we've had very few people post here on a regular basis. Sheila, I have not communicated with you on going forward, but I hope you can find it within yourself to continue helping here and offering your experiences with Beau & Jeddie.
A new ISG was needed on the board, but it does not mean to take the place of what we've done here and can continue to do, which is show what Levemir can do for cats.
*edited to add Darlene, Laura, Robin and our other Marci 'cause I'm a dodo head when it comes to names
