So much for that OTJ trial...

Don't know what the hell happened. She came out of the blues. And now, I've just moved her into our new home with my boyfriend's cat and she's super stressed. Add to that I left her insulin at the place I'm moving from. Didn't even try to get a reading this morning, she wants to claw my face off when I try to do anything right now with the move. Not that I could have dosed her anyway...I'll be getting the insulin this evening after work. BLAH..

Try not to worry about it, she is obviously just very stressed by the move. Was she exposed to the other cat before this? I know when I moved in with my current roommate and her cats they tried to fight with Smoky. I kept him in a separate room for about a week so they could get to know each other better under the door.

Would you be able to go back and get her insulin or get a new bottle? I don't know how far away you moved but do you have the same vet?

Her levels increased before the move. The cats have met each other before, but only for a day or two, weeks ago. The insulin is not far away. I'll be getting it this evening.

don't fret. I bet with a little time her BG will settle down. moving is stressful for everyone, and if she isn't already stressed from it, she might be picking up on your stress level as well. new surroundings take time to acclimate to, even under the best of circumstances with no health issues at all. it'll get better, I know it! give lots of reassurance, put stuff around with her smell on it, spend a lot of time with her.

Oh Danielle, there is a lot going on right now and whether the cats knew each other before or not, the change of location alone can have a major effect on these babies. They get very attached to their environment and with the other cat in your new home, Serena is going to take a bit of time to make it her own. Right now she probably feels displaced and scared. Her numbers may have started elevating just due to all the other moving activities going on as things got packed and her old environment took on a new look and feel. Give her time to acclimate to her your new home and having a constant new kitty and human roommate. It's a big change for both of you so just give her lots of love, put some of her belongings around and take it one day at a time. She may need a little insulin support for a bit but I'm sure once she's settled, things will start calming down and so will her numbers.

Try deploying some Feliway classic diffusers to make it feel more like home scent-wise. Feliway Friends diffusers alongside the classic ones might help with adjustment to the new cat.

I know when I had to board smoky for two weeks one time and I came back my roommates kitties forgot who smoky was. I think cats forget other cats fairly quickly and remember people for a long time. I'm confident her levels will come back down once she settles into the new place.

Thank you everyone. It will indeed take some time for things to settle down. I'm the one constantly reminding my boyfriend that things will take time (his cat is a little peeved about these new fur balls in her home so she's not eating like usual). I suppose I can at least find comfort in the fact that her pancreas seems to have started functioning properly again, to some degree, since I had those few lovely days of blue numbers w/out insulin.

I'll look into this Feliway stuff, looks like a good thing to try!

Well I couldn't agree more with the comments that are posted Danielle.
Give it some time, she will give you that nice blue numbers soon again. You now know she can, so she will when she has settled in a little in your new home!

Be sure to let us know how she gets on with the Feliway.

And, needless to say, the best therapy of all is lots and lots of love and reassurance. I know you'll be over that like a rash. :)

It's been less than 24 hours, but it SEEMS like it could be having an effect on Serena. She's not been as fussy with me testing and dosing her like she was when she was stuck in the bedroom at my boyfriend's before I moved in. She could just be getting used to the house, so who knows...but I'll keep you all posted!

Great to hear!

That's good news. Maybe I will try Feliway for Smoky too. He was very laid-back and cuddly with me before his Dx.
Now he is nervous and doesn't want to stay with me since he started getting home tested. :( He just stays in his kitty bed all the time now or under the coffee table in my bedroom.

Try to see if he is more normal just before and just after his injection and whether he gets more quiet and withdrawn in the middle of the cycle. Vetsulin can make some cats feel really yucky.

He is very active early in the morning, he wants his canned food right away. He gets a little mad when I make him wait until he gets tested first. I think you are right about cats feeling icky on vetsulin. He does kind of drag in the middle of the day and wants to sleep a lot. His vet says it is partly due to his weight being low and he is weak from that.

Wide swings in BG can also be behind the lethargy. Keep an eye on it and be sure to give your vet feedback on general clinical signs as well as BG info.

It would be an invaluable help to you to record daily observations of this nature in the Remarks column of Smoky's spreadsheet. Just make a short note of anything you notice, even if it's only something subtle. As the record builds it can help you to spot patterns which may then act as a guide to yourself and your vets towards optimising Smoky's treatment regimen. Additionally, this type of daily journalling can be great to refer back to any time you need to backtrack/revisit treatments that worked/didn't work before. It helps you to 'listen' to your kitty.

I started testing on Sept 17 and have noticed that his BG seems to be a little higher each day before his am preshot
That is not uncommon; many cats tend to be higher at AMPS, while some tend to be higher at PMPS.

As you gather more data you'll be able to establish whether a tendency to be higher at AMPS is part of Smoky's general pattern. (There may always be exceptions on different days.)

Aaaaand we're getting settled again!! :)

Although now she's got this thing going on I think:
Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex

Nasty red swollen lower lip. Not sure what it could be. She eats/drinks out of stainless steel bowls. No plastic bags n stuff lying around for her to mess with. Thought it was bubble wrap when it first started a week or so ago, but that's been eliminated...

My cat Teasel's sister is prone to face/head lesions and eosinophilic plaques on the back of her rear legs. She was worse when she was younger (she's 6 now). She eats only prescription hypoallergenic canned food and that has helped enormously. Her episodes are self limiting over the course of several days to a week plus. I used to be told by the vet to give antihistamine (cetirizine) to her during an outbreak but it didn't make much difference. Now I treat her (rare) outbreaks with "benign neglect" and it seems to work.

Interesting. I'm concerned she might have an allergy to the food I switched her to, which would be such a shame. It's helped so much with her diabetes...

such a cute name! makes me smile seeing it:)
Rico had a bit of a swollen lip the other day but now it seems fine? It is not red.... now I am wondering??
It doesn't bother him and he is eating fine--hmmmmm
