So I have another diabetic cat.....

Sigh.

I took Scout to the vet this week for weight loss. I was worried it might be cancer but was hoping it was his thyroid. Instead, it's diabetes again.

Funny thing is, Boo was diagnosed in December when he was 9. Now it's December again and Scout is also 9. I told him that when I adopted him to fill Boo's place, this was not what I had in mind.

Luckily, we caught this early, he has no other complications and we have an amazing vet. He's starting out on Lantus--I spent about a billion dollars at the pharmacy yesterday. He got his first ear pokes and first shot today. He didn't mind the shot but hates the pokes--still, he did better at the 2nd one so he'll get used to it. He's a good boy.

Sorry to hear this Deanie. Uncanny about Boo and he being diagnosed in the same month at the same age. But he's in good hands. After having an FD kitty, I always wonder about future kitties even when fed the good stuff right from the start. Hope Scout will go into remission soon and be able to stay there.

Well, he started out at the vet with a glucose of 408. This morning's preshot was 346, +4 was 322 and this evening's (after only one shot of insulin) was 213. So we are already moving in the right direction.

Hi Deanie,

Sorry to hear the news.

My Scout was diagnosed 3 years ago and her sister Nipper 2 weeks ago. I understand what you're going through. I'm having an easier time the second time around, but it's still overwhelming at times.

I have to ask, To Kill a Mockingbird?

Cheers,
Lori

My favorite book too!!

I named Scout after TKAM Scout as well, but then she turned out to be quite the explorer so the name worked well. If I take both cats somewhere, Nipper will stay in the carrier until Scout does a circuit of the room then reports back to Nipper.

Also about 3 years ago, there was a newly diagnosed Atticus on the forum. :)

It does get easier even with two diabetic cats. Witn & Spot were both diabetic at the same time. In addition, I also had a dog that often had seizures. You just need to find a routine that works best for you.
