So I guess I should post here now

So used to posting in the Lantus forum.

I got a baby scale today, and learned that Shiloh has gained two pounds since her diagnosis in May! The vet said he would like to see her stay at 12.5 pounds, but she is now at 14.4.

I normally feed a half a can in the morning, a half a can in the evening, and then split a half a can between the two cats for the during the day and again for the during the night feedings.

They are eating the Friskies Pates. They don't normally eat all the offering for morning and evening, but it is usually gone by the next feeding, along with most of the auto feeder food.

I suck at math, so I was wondering if some can tell me how many calories she SHOULD be getting?

Each cat is different so there is no real number of calories. You just have to decrease the food a little and slowly lose weight.
How is the other cat's weight doing? I am asking to help determine who is later finishing the food.

You can still post in the Lantus forum!! We know you and Shiloh best!!

There is a "formula" on catinfo.org that says [13.5 x weight in pounds] + 70 calories per day, but if that amount causes them to gain weight, you just have to decrease the amount their getting!!..but you don't want them losing too fast either...no more than about 1-2% per week

The food chart has the amount of calories per can over on the right side

Another option you can try is to increase her exercise so she's burning more calories

The other cat's weight is pretty stable, but he appears to have always had a higher metabolism than Shiloh. She has always been a Chunky Monkey! Or a Tubby Stubby as I call her.

These are pictures I just took. For body chart comparison.

Just a thought here, but as those are all at 8% to 10% carbs, you might want to go for something that's more like 4% carbs.
I was really shocked when I discovered how super carb-sensitive Bat-Bat's body actually is! Just the difference of a few less carbs, plus a bit of a redux in Shiloh's rations, may make a tremendous difference in her weight coming down.

I was so surprised - when I tried putting Bat-Bat on food that was just 1% (!) more carbs (feeding @ the same quantity as her other canned food) - that she actually started putting on weight! So I ended up mixing the two different formulas at each meal and reducing the quantity slightly ... and that did the trick.:)

She loves the Ocean Whitefish, and the Chicken and Tuna, but I know fish all the time isn't a good idea. I will check out the cat info again and see which lowers one I can find.

And Robin, as far as the body composition, what do you think from their pictures?
Spuds is lookin' pretty darned good there; Shiloh ... yeah, appears she needs to drop a little bit.

Really shouldn't be hard, either, if you get that carb content cut down to about 4% - may also mean you might not have to cut her portions back as much, either. (Bat loves the FF turkey w/giblets, btw - that's @ 4%, and there are lots of other brands to choose from that have that low a carb level, too!)

Earlier in the spring, I remember asking my vet if he thought maybe Bat needed to weigh more like 12 lbs (heck, she used to be 18 lbs!). It was just so hard for me to get used to her being a "slim-jim" type kitty. But he said, "Nope! I'd rather see her at 11 lbs, tops. Slender is better." (Surprised me because she's a pretty big cat.) But then I thought back to when she had grown so extremely thin, when first dx'd in 2013 ... and there really is a big difference between healthy slender & the horrible too-skinny of an active case of diabetes. She's a lot more active now at this weight - races around & bounces off the walls on some days, just like a really young cat!

P.S. I just LOVE that tail on Spuds. Looks like you had it dipped!:)

Rhonda, if this helps - I'm attaching a doc that I'd typed up: Had culled ultra-low carb choices from Dr. Pierson's list. Only I don't think Merrick makes the BG (Before Grain) formula anymore?

(Btw, if that's a current shot of Spuds, maybe he could use a tad less chow, too? As looks like he's got a bit of a belly goin' on ...)
