So this is Snits last cycle for a .10 dose. Based on her numbers should I do a few days with a drop dose or go ahead and do a OTJ trial? Day 7/8 is slightly higher bc she got into dry food. Today’s AMPS is 15 min late because I overslept. Ty!
 
I think you're good to start an OTJ trial (one cycle early)!

Here are the instructions:
  • Start the trial on the next green pre shot.
  • If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.
  • After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!
Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Thank you so much! You give so much detailed information. Is it one cycle early? Counting today I count 14 cycles. Her first .10 cycle was a PMPS shot. I could just be misunderstanding! I’m okay with starting her OTJ trial tomorrow as it would give more continuity.
 
Oh, my bad! When I saw your SS, the entries this morning's AMPS and dose weren't there. That makes it 14 cycles and you can start the OTJ trial tonight. I thought you were asking about starting this morning.

Oh, yeah, that's my bad! Sometimes I post here first. Would it be okay if I started it tomorrow so I can go by days instead of cycles?
 
Snits has some pretty nasty hairballs today. Gave her some olive oil with her pmps food.

Do y'all know if zyrtec is ok for cats? She has asthma, but the vet said a steroid would just blimp her up. I had her on it for awhile and she did good, but I'm worried about anything spiking her BG at this point. I would have to crush it up in her food since she will not tolerate pills at all. Before I was wedging it inside of a temptation treat which I ofc will not do now.

I give Bella Zyrtec in the spring, she scratches her ears and our previous vet suggested it, and it really helps her. I don’t know if it would help with asthma but why not.
I dissolve it in water in her food bowl, it takes a very short time, then crush and mix with food.

Thanks! I don't know if she OFFICIALLY has asthma, but my old school vet put a stethoscope up to her and said oh she has some asthma. When she was on zyrtec it really helped. Do you notice it raising her BG at all?
 
I give zyrtec to my cat with skin allergies. She too has drawn blood from scratching her ears and it really has helped. It’s also helped her EGC to the point that now my vet and I both wonder if her allergies are protein related or environmental.

No, I don't think it made any difference in her blood sugar levels.
