Hi All-

My civvie Trinket has been having sneezing fits for the past couple days - like 6-7 sneezes in a row several times a day. She's young, she'll be 2 in May. She's always been a sneezy cat. Before she came to live with me a year ago she had a bad URI so she stayed longer with her foster mom. She's not snotty just sneezy. She's not scratching so I think it's more a cold than alergies. I started sprinkling L-Lysine on her food. I'm not sure how much she should get every day. Does anyone know? Is there anything else I can do for her?

Thanks!

With L-lysine you can't overdose her, she will just pee out what she can't use. But the dosing that my vet had me start Duvessa on when she gets sneezey in the spring is 500mg per day or 250mg twice a day.

Mel, Maxwell, Autumn & The Fur Gang

Has anyone checked her sinuses for polyps or stuck materials? Those may provoke sneezing too, although uncommon.

Hi-

My Trink is quite the drama queen so I don't plan on taking her to the vet unless I absolutely have to. The Lysine is actually working! She has stopped having sneezing fits; she's down to one sneeze now but she's still sneezing more than normal. I'm continuing to watch it it and give her the lysine.

Thanks for your help!!!

The dose that has been recommended to me is 1/8 of a teaspoon twice I day. I don't believe that L-lysine is water soluble. Longer term use of high doses can cause gallstones and elevate cholesterol as well as cause diarrhea and abdominal cramps. There are L-lysine chews that are available for cats that would have the appropriate dose. I don't think they're appropriate for a diabetic but that shouldn't be an issue for Trinket.

I was thinking that due to her young age, it might be an allergy to her litter? Are you using clay litter? My previous cat started coming down with sneezing issues around 2 years old as well. It soon led to some breathing/wheezing problems and eventually a URI a couple of times. The vet said the most common cause he'd seen of chronic respiratory problems had the most simple solution: getting rid of clay litter. He suggested I try changing that first to see if it helped. Never had a problem again. :-D

Thanks Sienne- very helpful to see there are treats too!

Well, now my second cat Merlin has a cold too-he must have caught in from her, so I'm guessing it must not be allergies.
