Dumb question here but... with ProZinc there are two substances in the vial- one clear, one milky that you slowly mix. I looked at a pen and there isn't any milky stuff in it and the instructions say it should be clear, if it is cloudy it is bad. So is there anything to mix? Do I need to roll it slowly?

Thanks.

No, please do not roll or shake the pen/vial of Levemir! It is a solution, not a suspension like prozinc.

Store Levemir in a part of the fridge away from the freezer so it doesn' accidently freeze and also do not store it in the door because the door is constantly being moved. If you have the pens, keep them closed and in their box. If you have the vial, keep it in the box as well, it is sensitive to light. All pens including the present "open" one should be refrigerated for longest life. Pay no attention to the manufacturer's 42 day limit, that does not apply since we keep it refrigerated. I used pens till gone for more than twice that long and others report using them well past their expiration date printed on the pens!

Heather,
I think we need to make something very clear.... there are NO DUMB QUESTIONS!
You just make sure that you ask every single one you have.
I will wish you guys the best on the switch, but I am betting that you will do fine, and Sneakers will do even better!
here is the link to the sticky about proper handling of your new insulin.
If you have any questions about anything in the info, ask right away and there will be someone who can help with giving or getting you an answer.

Lantus & Levemir: Info, Proper Handling & Storage has picture of syringe and insulin pens.

I have it in the box on the shelf underneath the meat drawer. I figured since I was going to start using it on Friday that i would make sure I understood how to use it correctly.

Just looked over the links. Will print out and place in my (ever growing) binder :-D . And watched the video- a really good to watch.

I will start with 2u- between 50% and 75%. I think I will need to keep it there for a week- 3 days to build her shed and 3 days to settle into the dose with just her normal testing and next weekend I will be able to do an actual curve and see how she is doing through the cycle on the new stuff.

She is being a pain right now. She has decided to now boycott the raw food I make and gobbles up the canned FF like there is no tomorrow  . She's done it before but it makes her poop smell awful and the smell lingers for quite some time afterwards. She will eat the raw when I am not there- so I have decided to put it out when I am at work, and will feed her the canned in the morning and evening when I am at home. When she doesn't eat her numbers skyrocket- 507 this morning from her 3am boycott!

I wonder why her numbers are going up after not eating? Usually they are lower if appetite is off.

I notice in her SS where she drops 300 points in 1-2 hours, sometimes 3 hrs. That alone can cause rebound into the 500s even when the lowest number is not "too low".

Be sure you are testing often after the switch. I have seen a number of cats have a dramatic response to lev on the first few shots, Including Beau. His starting lev dose (.5u) was about half of his vetsulin dose (sliding scale from .7u to 1.2u) and he dropped to 37 on his 3rd shot. yes, his numbers were lower overall to Sneakers' numbers, but just be aware that this can happen.

An auto feeder can help with the big early drops; just put the times to turn every hour and have a fraction of the amount of food into each slot. It's worked for many to feed 1TBSP every hour, till +4 or so, then no cliff diving and no following soaring high to the moon.

I think the 2u dose will be nice and safe, and you will be around to watch.
