Just getting on board. Sneakers has been on PZI for two weeks now.

Just did a curve weekend and am following the much appreciated advice to start over with the dosage as she has extreme highs and lows. Starting her off at 1u and keeping an eye on her levels. Her first 12 hours she was in the pink. Will be testing next at +10 which is normally red or black.

Just stopping in to say hi!

Hi Heather and Sneakers! Just wanted to say welcome to PZI! We are most busy here mornings and evenings, but we stop by mid day sometimes too.
Looking forward to getting to know you guys and helping Sneakers get into some good numbers.

Hi Heather and Sneakers!
Welcome to PZI! looking forward to getting to know the both of you!
Can you give us some background as what Sneakers is eating,
are you testing for ketones?
4 units is very high amount of insulin to start with
So very glad you started over again at one unit
PLease give the one unit a couple of days as if Sneakers is boincing from to much insulin
It will take a few days to clear.

Glad you came over, Heather. As Donna said, this forum is much smaller than Health and busiest in the am and pm. But everyone here uses or has used your insulin so they should have good advice for you when needed.

Glad to see some pinks instead of black. Any luck with the ketone tests?

Well, Teresa- found another dead mouse today- why she only eats the front half is anybody's guess. But that may be why she didn't eat her snack I set out. As the mouse was still very much wet- I don't think her 407 can be considered a fasting bg and 45 minutes later she was a 413.

Diagnosed just before Thanksgiving 2011, started Monday after on Humulin, 4u. Have since switched to PZI- vet said 3u as the potency of the old bottle might have lessened and to creep it back up to 4u.

In my own research I found the Feline Diabetes website but not the forum- that came later.
I switched her food to canned about 5 days before she started her insulin. The vet kept her for 3 days and was feeding her dry food after my cans ran out. Looking at the itemized bill I don't think he did curves, just tested at feeding which was a really high number

Since switching to PZI i wanted to get a curve and see if she really should be at 3u. Sue & Oliver suggested she might be overdosed and rebounding with the highs and lows in such a short time. So I am now on the start low, go slow approach. I will do another curve this weekend as that is the only time i am home for any length of time.

I am testing for ketones now- I have the strips rather than a meter. First test was yesterday and I got a color between the negative and a trace but when I asked someone said PZI sometimes does that. Will continue testing.

Food-
she is mostly on the Recipe, more cooked than raw but everything else is the same, frozen into 1 ounce cubes. I have bought some fancy feast classics and Milo's Kitchen- there were no grains listed in the ingredients. I couldn't find freeze-dried anything. Will go to petsmart next time. her feeding is a little low- but as she might be supplementing her chicken for mice that might be why. She caught and devoured birds before I knew she was diabetic- come home to feathers and claws and, I think, the breastbone. At least she leaves them in the kitchen where mopping is easy...

I really like Sneakers. The little mouser!

I'm glad to see you've switched to PZI (or do you mean ProZinc?) as it's better for the kitties than the harsher N stuff. As Sneakers settles into the dose you may see the numbers dropping and may not need to increase. Then again, ECID.

And good on you for testing for ketones! Woohoo! I rarely get the opportunity as Poopy is bashful about litter box voyeurs.

Hi Heather,

Glad to see you came over to PZI Land! Welcome!

Back this evening and her +3.5 was 237- she hasn't been that low in days! ProZinc is what it says on the label.

I left out a very wet ounce of food and it was gone when I got back- since she ate only one ounces when I go home after work it is possible the 237 was a fasting rate. She is having another two ounces now with plenty of water mixed in.

Maybe she just needed to chase some mice. I am just hoping she has found a nest outside and the warm weather has been bringing them up.

Will order a ketone meter tonight if possible.

Are you thinking it will be too hard to get a sample? Have you tried the aquarium gravel? Ketone meters are great (mine was PrecisionXtra and would do bg levels and ketones.). But the ketone strips are very expensive.

I know!
I got a free meter when I bought a box of 10 strips- for $37.80 :!: :!:
I bought two boxes with 2-day shipping. And since ADW is now a shopping partner I ordered through the site link :-D .

I will test in the blood when I get it and continue to do the pee on a daily basis- those strips are 50/$7 and W-M. If I get a high number I will then test the blood.

That's actually a steal! My meter cost, I think, $30, and my strips were five bucks a piece. Thankfully I haven't needed to use the meter at all for months. I must have looked at a dozen drug stores, and while a few sold the meter, none had the strips in stock. Wish I had known about ADW then....

I tried to find the preciscion ultra or whatever but when i clicked on the links at website and went to looking around none of them had it.

So I got the nova kind.

Nova Max Plus? That's the one I have. No "free meter" deal when I bought it! I got ripped!
@)**&$&^@!^^& meters!
