My cat recently went into remission from diabetes. I am feeding him 2 (3oz.) cans of Fancy Feast Classic each 24 hr.eriod. He is not satisfied with this and constantly meows about 4 hrs. after each 6 hr. feeding. He weighs 14 lbs. (13 yrs. old). I figured he should have about 223 calories a day. Would it be ok to feed him a diabetic snack and if so, which one and how often?

The vet who has the catinfo.org site has this formula

Calories per day = 13-6 X optimal body weight +70

If your cat is at his optimal weight, that would be 260 calories a day.

My cats like PureBites and Bonito flakes, both low carb treats. Others boil a chciken breast with no spices and cut it up into small pieces and freeze for treats. All would be good snacks.

Are you sure he is in remission? What kind of numbers are you seeing? We generally consider a cat in remission if they range from 40-120 for 14 days, off insulin. I am wondering why he is so humgry.

My Wink gets fed 4 times a day. He seems to know exactly when it's time to be fed. Even though he's getting plenty of food, he'll start to "agitate" an hour or 2 early to be fed if I'm around, hoping that I "cave in" and feed him a bit early. He gets really, really persistent sometimes.

In fact, right now he's playing "Printer Vulture", sitting on top of my printer giving me the stink eye and chattering at me. Dinner isn't for another 15 minutes, but he's trying real hard to wear me down. ohmygod_smile

Sorry Wink, you can wait. I know you don't want to, but no early dinner for you tonight.

Maybe that's what your cat is doing, trying to wear you down. What's his name by the way?

If you would share some BG (blood glucose) numbers with us, that would be helpful.

My cat's name is Dinnybones. He definitely is trying to wear me down!!!! I am unable to get a reading on him. I know that sounds ridiculous, but even my son-in-law is unable to get one. When I had him at the vets last month he became SO agitated they had to wear thick rubber gloves to even handle him. Next time he needs to be seen the vet will come to my house to see him-he is unable too handle going there to the office.

The vet is the one who determined him to be in remission after lab tests to see if there were any signs of any glucose in his urine, liver, kidneys, etc. He had been on insulin for a few years but then had not been getting it for a few months. Although he exhibited no symptoms, he was checked to be sure. It was then she decided that evidently since I had switched him from a dry food diet (free feed) to a wet controlled feeding schedule that he was, in fact, in remission. I was more or less estimatating on the calories based on what I had read on some of the sites I had researched-you are probly right.

High hunger without urine glucose, nor urine ketones, could be a sign of hyperthyroidism.

Is he losing weight?

My signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools has some assessments you may be able to make for evaluating how your cat is doing.

thank you for the information. I bought my cat some fancy feast appetizers which are meant to be eaten as a supplement between regular feedings. he would not eat them. i tried 2 different flavors. none of the stores i went in sold diabetic treats/snacks. i did call my vet for suggestions this morning but have not received a return call. if you are correct in saying my cat can have 260 calories each day; (if that was you who said that) i am wondering if i feed him 3 of the 3 oz. cans of the fancy feast every day that will be enough to satisfy him? some of the flavors are 85 calories according to the one site i was on. that will give him one more can that what i give him now. i just hope he soon gets regulated on some sort of a schedule-he is keeping me up at nite and messing up my sleep schedule-lol. then he wants to sleep all day.

I'm feeding my cats roughly 0.5 to 1.0 ounces per pound of weight divided into 2 feedings which are nibbled for the next 10 hours or so.

So an 8 pound cat might get 4 ounces both morning and night.

Anything that is pure protein is good to use as a treat for a diabetic kitty. Sorry to hear your Dinnybones didn't like the Fancy Feast appetizers. Most cats love those.

Some people cook up a piece of chicken, no spices and cut it up into tiny pieces.
Any meat he likes, you could cook up a bit and see if he likes it.

Ham often has some sugar and spices in it, so not too much of that.
Luncheon meat, tiny piece of cheese, freeze dried treats at places like Petco or Petsmart.
If you have a pet specialty store near you, you might want to ask what they have that is pure protein in either dog or cat treats. Dog treats are usually just a bigger size, and you can break them up into tiny bits.

Look for something that does not have any grain, peas, potatoes or any other fruits or vegetables in it. Just the meat. That should be good for Dinnybones to snack on.

I did have some chicken breasts that I cut up but he would not go near them either. I have a feeling he is very picky. I wonder if plain ground beef would be okay?

Dark meat has more of a flavor to it, so he might like that better. Turkey has a different flavor too, so that is something else to try. If your feed any ground turkey or chicken, I'd cook it first to kill off any possible bacteria present, like salmonella.
