3/4 can FF Clas

9:14 235
eating now >1/2 can and am gonna shoot .5

He has been high in the am. Crazy high this morning. Was still dropping oddly this pm but because he runs high consistently in am I think ok to shoot the .5 Hope so anyways.

Am gonna test him again at about midnight just to be sure.

I now know how to do my chart for him so will start plugging in numbers tomorrow sometime. Am going to include pre-going back on ProZinc ones also.

Well he had a nice drop today. Interesting that he dropped twice today as well. Yes I would definitely test him at midnight to make sure he isn't dropping too fast. It would be good to have your higher carb food (gravy) and/or honey available just in case. It will be good to see all the numbers that you have collected.

If he drops lower than say 60 or 50 ....how often do I have to keep checking him to get his numbers back up. Like if I give Karo and food and they go up then do I have to test him again in like an hour or so and do it again?

Whoa! What a number. Makes me wonder what happened to cause it.

I believe in that situation, you'd test every 20-30 minutes. You want 3 rising numbers in a row for that.

How is Smudge?

I looked at your SS to see if its been updated but looks like you havent had a chance yet. How'd the numbers do?

Also, I know you said he wasn't really eating and you used FF chunky as a topper. Is he not eating because he doesnt feel well or because he's not a fan of the food. I only ask because there are other options if its because of the food type, and if not well feeling well finding out the culprit can help bg numbers.

Odd night. I tested him at midnight last night and he was 317 so I went to bed.
2:30 this morning he was attempting to open the kitchen cupboard door. I tie it shut but he still was banging it. All the cats lined up hoping to eat and the dogs were barking. We had a blizzard so.... but he tested at 2:30 am at 261!!!!!!!!!!wow.
Gave him <1.2 can ff and tested him at 8:45 this morning and he was 237.
Appears to be dropping slowly....
I gave him .5 u Prozinc this morning at 9 after he ate 1 can ff. Again I used the chunky as a topper because he did not like the bee chicken....which he doesn't really like but the snowstorm has made it hard to get food. Will go today to store again.
Will test him at noon to make sure he is not dropping too low.

Interesting that he drops continually all the way through the cycle, Mary. His numbers are looking better. I am glad you are sticking with the .5

He went to 261 at noon. I did not retest though and sometimes when I do it is a tad bit lower. Mostly because I think I do not get enough blood sometimes. Hope tonight I can start my sheet. Had a bird rescue today as it flew into my window and dealing with snow in driveway.

You were asking what you should do if he should drop to 50 or 60. Since you are using an AlphaTrak, you do not want him to go under 80. So you would want to start giving him HC food (gravy) and/or honey if he should drop below 80. You wouldn't want him to go to 50 or 60 at all. If you were using a human meter, you wouldn't want it to go lower than 40. So 80 is your "low" target.

Well no fear of that since he went up to332 at 9:15. Hope I can get this chart started later tonight. Did not know that about below 80. I gave .5 again tonight. Will see where he is in the morning. I would like him under 200 and so far outside that one day right after 2 units from vet it has not happened. But somehow think he is bouncing around a bit. Maybe I need a syringe that will allow me to do .75? I have to look I may have one. Or two.

Since Smudge may be needing small doses and the next time you need to buy syringes, you may want to consider U100 syringes. I borrowed this explanation from a post from Elizabeth who best describes it.

Different insulins come in different concentrations/dilutions. Prozinc has 40 units of insulin per ml and is generally used with U40 syringes (like the ones that you are using now). Many other insulins have 100 units of insulin per ml and are measured in U100 syringes. If you were to put a unit of U40 Prozinc into a U100 syringe it would come to the 2.5 unit mark there (but would of course still be one unit of Prozinc). Using U100 syringes can make it much easier to measure small doses of U40 insulin.

There is a conversion chart here if you're interested in seeing how it works: http://www.felinediabetes.com/insulin-conversions.htm

The syringes that I buy 3/10 ml/cc, 31 gauge, 8mm (length - short needle).

Thanks. I will have to see how I can buy them and where. His Vet is not fun to deal with. Doesn't care much unless he can make money.

Try our SHOP link above and go to American Diabetes Wholesale, or to WalMart.
Unless your state requires a prescription to get syringes, you should be able to get them there.
Don't mention the conversion chart at a pharmacy; they'll argue with you.

You want
U-100 insulin syringes
3/10 cc (3/10 mL) volume
30 or 31 gauge (higher number is thinner; I find thinner bends on me)
short or long needle (I like short - less likely to bend on me, and less likely to poke all the way through)
with half unit markings You may need to look at them or ask customer service if online
