Smokey's Updated Thread Diet Change/No Insulin (so far)

Hi Wendi,

Your numbers improved with the diet change but these are still diabetic numbers. Smokey needs insulin.

I would start at a low dose, .25u at first to monitor how the insulin is working for him and then small increases if needed.

Are you checking for ketones? If not you can get some Ketostix at any drug store, they are around $12 and you test Smokey's urine.

When I look at Smokeys SS those are still diabetic numbers. With no non diabetic numbers. Those numbers are straining the pancreas. In order to help the pancreas that would mean to start insulin. You switched to lower carb food which is good & I see it helped drop BG numbers. The canned food alone isn't going to bring the BG numbers to normal ranges. Unless the pancreas is going to kick in. Right now there isn't much proof that the pancreas is working that well because Smokey isn't dropping into normal ranges. It's been 3 weeks since you switched the diet & you have collected data from the diet change. I would go ahead & consult with your vet & get a small dose of insulin started. The insulin will help support the pancreas so maybe it can repair itself & go ahead & go into remission. The key is to help support the pancreas. Right now the pancreas has no support. The longer the pancreas strains the less chance it has of repairing & possible remission.
 
I am kinda assuming the weight loss is due to his still being diabetic, which starves the body of nutrition. I'm thinking a couple weeks of tiny doses of insulin might get his pancreas working again, with his numbers I really think he has a chance at remission with just a little bit of help. And they're right, the longer you wait the greater the chance of the pancreas not responding. I know it's hard to give the shots, but I'm so glad I did it....and Ms. Kitten is too. She's like a new cat, it's amazing!
 
As you all have seen lately Smokey has been hanging around the 200-300's so we decided to start him on insulin. This morning we were running about 2 hours late on ear prick and breakfast for him......we slept in. When we tested his number was up to 330 and he was hungry as can be. Should we do an after food intake test to see where his number is now and start him on like .2 units?
BTW Smokey it seems like Smokey is much more hungry lately, he's always wanting feedings in between both meals.

To get you more help can you edit your very first post on this thread and change the title to "Starting insulin again, 330 AMBG, 0.2u +1 dosing help" or something similar....and you can use the 911 if you feel like it, just take it off once you get help.

I'm so glad you came back. I think you could go with .5u very safely. But if you want to start at .2u to see how it goes that is just fine too.

And you've already got Robin watching you, so you'll be good today. She and Kim (kse) are very helpful at figuring out what is going on. I have to go to work, but wanted to say WELCOME BACK!!! I know it's scary, but everyone here has been through it and knows exactly how you feel, so it's a great place to be!

*could somebody clarify what syringes to ask for when you want the ones marked at 0.5 units? Were they 3/16cc?
 
I used the Walmart Relion syringes.

U100 (you need to print out and use the conversion chart).

3/10ml - 30 doses, 31 guage, 8mm short needle, UPC code 6 81131 31179 3
3/10ml - 30 doses, 29 guage, 12.7mm long needle, UPC code 6 81131 31167 0

Before you leave the pharmacy, open the box and look at the syringes to make sure they have the half unit marks.
