I've decided to try an OTJ trial with Smokey... here's my logic:
I'm pretty sure that the insulin I'm using (the first vial opened Aug 17- so 3 months old) is no longer working. The past two weeks have seen absolutely no normal up and down in Smokey's cycles. He has been having very flat cycles hovering between 110 (in the AM) and 70's during the rest of the day. Additionally, the reduces I've taken in order to maintain my sanity while I'm at work (IE fear of coming home to a hypo Smokers) have made absolutely no difference. And, when I've given Smokey HC food, his BG does not spike like it has in the past and is back down pretty quickly. All of that being said, I am totally ready to get a new vial of insulin if his numbers start climbing- though, thus far, we are golden and it has been over 48 hours since his last shot. I'm watching him like a hawk and am testing his BG fairly often (see updated SS).
I've also started giving Smokey a 1/4 tablet of Pepcid (original strength). We've been having frequent small yuck-ups. But he is still eating (though not much- he's a pretty sedentary cat, always has been) and not losing weight, is purry and seems happy. I'll likely schedule a vet apt in the next few weeks for blood work so we'll see how this goes.
I just want to say again, how much LLand has meant to me and Smokers- we're not going anywhere anytime soon though! Fingers crossed!!!!!!!
