Took one of my civvies to the vet for his annual. I gave the PZI info to the vet in advance to Smokey's visit next week. The vet said PZI and Prozinc was to similar to Vetsulin and he thinks Lantus would be better. Smokey has been rollercoasting lately. I know a lot of you use Lantus. I'm going to start reading the info here to get up to speed. Any help you can provide will be appreciated. He will change end of next week which is good. I'll be home 4 days in a row to keep an eye on him.

While ProZinc and PZI (BCP PZI maybe) are similar to Vetsuli there are differences.
- ProZinc is human Recombinant DNA origin insulin combined with Protomine Zinc (PZ) to extents it duration
- BCP PZI is bovine insulin combined with Protomine Zinc (PZ) to extents it duration
- Vetsulin is porcine insulin zinc suspension is a sterile, aqueous suspension of purified porcine insulin. Vetsulin contains 40 IU per mL, consisting of 35% amorphous and 65% crystalline zinc insulin. Vetsulin is a lente, or intermediate-acting, insulin.
Both ProZinc and BCP PZI last about 12 hours compared with Vetsulin that lasts less time.
Bovine insulin is closer to a cats insulin than either porcine insulin or human insulin

Larry, thanks for replying. I think you told me this in another post. I was leaning towards BCP PZI. I gave him the information on it. I like the fact is close to feline naturally and lasts 12 hrs.

I don't know whether to stick to my guns or give Lantus a try.

Good luck Paula with which ever insulin you go with. I learned something new; I thought it was ProZinc that was bovine insulin.

Either Prozinc, BCP PZI or Lantus are good options. BCP PZI is probably a little bit cheaper than the others. My cat did well on Prozinc and other cats do well on the others. Lantus has more of a learning curve because it has a depot, meaning it takes a couple days for the depot to fill up and it takes a couple of days for you to see the full effect of dose increases or decreases. You could go to the Lantus forum and read the stickies about it, and do the same for Prozinc, then make a decision based on which one feels more comfortable for you. Either way, Smokey will be better off

BTW, if you go with Prozinc, order it from ValleyVet.com. That's the cheapest place I found it: $95 and shipping was free (but that may depend on your location, I've heard they can charge $20 for overnight shipping).

There's a member who is selling Lantus pretty cheaply on the Supply Closet forum or you can order it from one of the Canadian pharmacies.

Just some thoughts since I know both these insulins cost more than Vetsulin.
