I am planning to order slippery elm bark. I have no idea whether I should order powder, liquid and what strength to order. Can anyone that uses this advise please?

Thanks!

I keep saying I'm going to try this for my Candy (IBD) but have never actually taken the plunge. Please let us know how you get on with it!

P.S. I know you shouldn't give it with other meds, or within a couple of hours of other meds, as it may affect absorption.

I will Lucy!

Do you have any health food, fancy grocery, or bulk food stores near you? If you can find the powder in bulk locally you can try a small amount for cheap. Don't be turned off by the high price per ounce or grams, the powder is very light. I was able to get at least a tablespoon of powder for less than a dollar at Whole Foods. The stores in my area stock the powder in small canisters with the bulk spices.

There is a Fresh Market, a smaller version of Whole Foods close by along with a few other health food stores. Will try them. Thanks for the suggestion!

Fruitful field (NOW Slippery Elm Powder) has the one we use--
it has helped more than I imagined it would, my boys won't eat it mixed in food (once in a while in baby food) it is kind of a pain putting it in the capsules and it is fluffy so I pack it in real full--I use size 5 capsules and dab it in butter --slides right down and I try to give them something they will eat right after to make sure it isn't stuck but the butter helps too-
I think Rico has the best poop he has ever had in his life and (anti jinx) no vomit/acid..... he can't take pepcid so this is a miracle for us!

Awesome!!! I have to try it for my IBD sweetie girl, Candy, now! :cat::cat::cat:

For anyone in the UK reading this thread, try Neal's Yard for organic slippery elm powder. Check with them if it's organic before ordering as they don't always have the organic powder. (They're very helpful.) Also I think there's a Scottish company that does the powder but again you need to check on a batch by batch basis as to whether it's organic. (Long time since I looked -sorry I can't remember their name. Try a web search.)

When I was sourcing slippery elm bark, several places said they no longer carried it because it was becoming more difficult to get. I think I read the plant was threatened due to losses from dutch elm disease. Anyway, in my research the alternative given was marshmallow root. It has similar properties. There is a warning for diabetics to seek medical advice before using since some studies have indicated it may reduce BG. Has anyone tried marshmallow root?

I'm looking into SEB too. I tried it once, but for another cat, and had little success.

Anyway, noticed you use the Bayer Contour Next. I have that one and was advised to switch to AlphaTrak (which I don't care for because of a number of reasons). How do you interpret the numbers from the Bayer device? I would like to switch back to that one, but the numbers were off by 50 to 70 or more.

The few times I have been able to take a sample with the Contour Next at the vet office while blood is being drawn for tests the Contour Next value was pretty close to the number from the lab. In addition to my regular vet I have taken Bama to the Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center and they had no issues with the Contour Next and made no mention of using an AlphaTrak. Honestly, they were ecstatic to have so much data.

As for interpretation I follow the guidelines for the human meters that are listed at FDMB and on the spreadsheets. I have found the meter can read low with a small sample and while it allows you to add more blood for an under fill it always results in a low number. Bama has mostly asymptomatic hypoglycemic events or her only symptom is polyphagia. She is pretty resilient at low numbers and I haven't had any problems with raising her BG and keeping it raised when necessary. I can't say how well the Contour Next would perform for a cat that experiences more severe hypoglycemia.

If your cat is crossing the renal threshold you could try using urine glucose tests coupled with well timed blood tests to try to get a better idea of where the renal threshold reads on your glucose meter.

Finally, this thread might have some helpful information for you. It specifically references the Relion meter but it is really about comparing a human meter and pet meter. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/relion-vs-alphatrak.152147/#post-1607467

Let me know if you have any other questions or need any clarification. I'll watch this thread for updates.

I've been thinking of ordering slippery elm bark for my cat, who has a very sensitive stomach and has ongoing diarrhea. Antibiotics help until I stop giving them. His food is low carb wet food, and for some reason or because of the diabetes, his stomach can't handle the diet. I checked online so can anyone tell me which product works best with a diabetic cat if I order from iherb? http://eu.iherb.com/Slippery-Elm
