I'm newly registered on this board, but have been asking a ton of questions. I'm sorry if you guys are getting sick of me!

Most of the time, my DH and I have adjusted our lives to make sure we are home to give Spider his insulin shots. Tomorrow (Friday) we are unable to be home for his night dose. Spider gets his insulin at 6:30 AM/PM. We will be leaving home at 3:30 PM and won't be home until around 1 or 2 AM. Short of dropping him off for the night at the kennel, we don't really have anyone to give him his shots. (Spider stays hidden the entire time when "strangers" are in the house, even if they are there to feed him while we're out of town). My question is, should we skip his dose (which the vet said would be ok since she'd prefer to have him be a little high for a few hours than too low), or do we give him insulin before we go (3 hours early), or when we get home (only about 4-5 hours until his next dose is due).

What do other Lantus users do in similar situations? Skip, go early or late?

Thanks!

Generally, we try not to shift times more than 30 minutes per day, so if you know ahead of time, you may be able to shift across several days, then shift back.

So, you might shoot 30 min later tonight, and 30 min later tomorrow am, skip tomorrow night, then get back on schedule.

Nope, not sick of you, not possible. Not a ton of questions, just the normal amount of someone trying to learn how to care for a new sugarkitty. The only bad question is the one you don't ask.

"Better too high for a day, than too low for a minute." so I would recommend skipping that shot where you will be away for so long. Think of it as a fur shot or a skipped shot because your cat was too low to shoot. Those are two other situations where you did not give insulin. Life happens and you work around your responsibilities.

Thanks for reminding me that we're not bad kitty parents because we have other things to do sometimes!
