Hi,

Has anyone any experience of using Skin Tac and Tac Away for holding a Freestyle Libre in place on a cat? Our new vet recommended trying the Freestyle libre when a fructosamine test showed my cat needed an increase in insulin. The first libre was applied using tissue glue and lasted 9 days out of a possible 14. I have since seen a chap on You Tube discussing Skin Tac as a way of keeping the libre in place for 14 days. I've managed to obtain samples of the skin tac and tac away which my vet is willing to try. My only concern is the removal of the libre.
Any advice gratefully received.

Reading the description of Skin Tac it appears to enhance an adhesive like on the Libre sensor, to adhering to the skin and provides a barrier between the adhesive and the skin. I wouod say tissue glue is better since my experience is that tissue glue will take off some skin while I suspect the Skin Tac would not.
What was the symptom of the sensor only lasting 9 days? Was the sensor scratched off?

Thank you for your response. He kept licking it which probably loosened it. The sensor then lifted on one side which meant he was then able to tug at it. From what I've read somewhere between 6-10 days appears to be the average length of time these sensors last on cats despite the sensor having a lifespan of 14 days. I'm not unhappy that we only got 9 days of readings. We were able to see that he was consistently dropping very low (2.0 mmdol) during the night on Prozinc which we would never have picked up on with the alphatrak. It would however, be more cost effective if we could get the full 14 day readings as Benny is now on a much reduced level of insulin whilst the vet tries to establish the correct dosage.
