Thanks for the welcome. I need all the help I can get. I got tired of the yo-yoing of the units given by the vet - and decided to go on my own after reading this forum. My main concern is how Sissy feels - in other words, I don't care if she is tightly regulated, just that she feels good.
We need a little more info on Sissy:
(a) When was she diagnosed? Sissy was diagnosed a couple of months ago with high BG but the vet waited to put her on insulin until mid Jan or so.
(b) How long was she on Prozinc. She was on prozinc from mid-Jan ish to 20 Feb.
(c) When did you switch to Lantus/Glargine? She switched on 20Feb.
(d) What are you feeding her? She is eating canned high protein (Fussie cat), low carbs – most of the time. Sometimes it’s difficult to get her to eat so I feed her whatever she wants, which includes high carb food. I realize this isn’t ideal, but when she won’t eat, there’s only so much I can do. She’s had pancreatitis in the past and currently has high creatinine and BUN numbers. I’ve been putting aluminum hydroxide powder on her food to reduce phosphorus.
(e) Was a food trial done before you started insulin? That is, if she was eating kibble, did you switch her to a low carb diet to see her diabetes could be controlled with a diet change? She’s been eating canned high protein food for a long time.
(f) How many units of insulin are you giving her? 2.5U in the AM and 0.5U in the PM? The vet changed the units each day, depending on Sissy’s BG. Sometimes the a.m. would be 2.5 and other times 1.5. The p.m. number would usually be .5 to 1, again, depending on the BG. (The vet is able to see her readings from the freestyle libre sensor when I take readings). After reading this forum, I decided that the changes in Sissy’s numbers needed to be more regulated – so I started with .5 and then went to .75 in the a.m. The p.m. is .5 – but that seems too high.
(g) The chart for Feb 23 to Feb 28 - is that for the above dosing? See answer to f. The dosing is based on vet numbers which changed daily, to numbers I’ve tried to stabilize over a few days.
(h) Does Sissy have any other health issues? Do you know if the vet checked her for ketones at diagnosis? Don’t know about ketones. She has had pancreatitis this past summer. She also has high (7 creatinine) and BUN numbers.
