Hello again, dear friends, what can we do to better battle Toronto's constipation? Never had this issue before but since on low carb and insulin he's suffering day in and day out because of it. Laxatone is helping but not enough.
Any ideas are welcome, thank you so much !

Adding extra water to every wet food meal can boost hydration and that can help. Many people add plain canned pumpkin to wet food. There's another product called Natural Moves that has been used by some folks here to very good effect. I think it's available online.

Is the classical 100% canned pumpkin from everywhere ok? Or it's some special cat pumpkin food or so? I would try that first.....

It's plain canned pumpkin that you can usually find in any grocery store. Don't buy the version for pies that has spices added!

I use all natural Pet Alive Natural Moves. Elmo has not had even one day of constipation since starting it!!! And this is a kitty that needed enemas on a regular basis before starting NM:). It has been life giving for us both :)

My civvie, Sammy, was on Laxatone, and it worked great for him, but it does have molasses in it. That could affect Toronto's BG.

I started giving Sammy Miralax, 1/8 tsp dissolved in water and syringed in. I'm now trying half a tab of probiotic, but I'm watching him closely.

Rhiannon told me about some food that already has pumpkin in it. You can get in from Chewy's. It called Wellness Trufood. I haven't tried it yet since I couldn't get to a store to pick up just a few cans since we have picky eaters here.

The Pet Alive Natural Moves sounds like it works well also. Hope you can find something that works well for your Toronto! :bighug:

Slippery Elm Bark has done wonders for my other cat. Miralax just wasn't enough to get him moving. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks, and just give him half a capsule every other day, but it seems to be helping. Apparently it doesn't taste very good though since Sam won't touch it without a LOT of something to cover up the taste.

A pre/probiotic is helpful too for cats with chronic bowel issues.

And also, sometimes it isn't constipation, sometimes it's just that the poop is so different from what we're used to coming off of higher carb food. This video is graphic, but helpful.

Lots of great ideas here. I hope they will help. One additional suggestion is to keep your vet engaged. The website Wendy mentioned differentiates between an acute crisis and more of a maintenance situation. I didn't realize my Rose was in acute crisis and tried some of the maintenance remedies before taking her to the vet. The vet showed me how to feel the problem in her abdomen (which felt like a basket of rocks). Hospitalization and multiple enemas were required to resolve that and now maintenance includes Miralax (to soften) and Cisipride (to move). I waited longer than I should have and it was harder on everyone to resolve. :(

Best wishes to you and Toronto as you work through this added challenge!

Thank you all. We'll start with some warm water/pumpkin/canned food mix. If that doesn't work - well, at least now we have the knowledge about other alternatives..........

Hi, Marvin also had a hard time with constipation. Lax a Day 1/8 to 1/4 tsp worked very well for him, you can get from pharmacist over the counter. My Vet suggested this one because it is mild and you can adjust as needed. I think it is the Canadian version of miralax others mentioned here. I had read up on this when Marvin got Dx, for him because he has neuropathy, the issue is that he doesn't move much any more, if Toronto is still active, playtime with him will help also. I also like to add water to each of Marvin's meals, sometime too much and it's more of a soup (ooops).

Jimmy had a rough night of it too. Several attempts and straining. I have been upping his fat intake and putting at least a tbsp of room temp water in every meal (EZC raw). The past 2 weeks or so I've also been adding EZ egg yolk to his meals. That is definitely helping them both (Jimmy's civvie sister). But tonight I had to give him lactulose. He pooped ten minutes later - but I think that's just a coincidence. After having had a good dollop of butter. I ordered the NM tonight - it has physllium husk so I'm hoping that helps.
