Hello everyone, an update on Simba who had a BG low of 48 on 12/10. Due to it being a weekend, I couldn't access my normal veterinary resources, so turned to this group with whom I hadn't interacted since Simba was first dx'd. In talking with Simba's vet this morning, who conferred with the hospital's Medical Director, we believe Simba was experiencing a Somogyi Effect episode, a first for me. It may, or may not, have been precipitated by my increasing his dose to 3u on 12/5. His BG readings have been bouncing in a wide range. I had not been doing preshot testing with him, so when I started doing a lot more testing, he became agitated, hiding and combative. He was trapped as a feral by me many years ago.
His AMPS reading today was 204, an acceptable number. He has been on 1.5u for 3 cycles. His vet suggested we stop testing and doing curves for a week, and manage him by observation of clinical symptoms and periodic fructosamine tests to allow his diabetes to stabilize, and his agitation to settle down. I highly concur with this recommendation, and am proceeding.
Marge helped me get my spreadsheet linked, and made several other suggestions, and I am grateful for her help. I continue to be awed by the precision and diligence with which kitty parents on this group manage their cats' illness. Honestly, at nearly 80yo, with some persistent health issues of my own (Simba and I share AFib), I am not sure I can keep up with the very specific requirements to be a contributing functioning member of the group. So, you won't hear from me for at least a week, I am really not sure when after that. Thanks to everyone for being welcoming and so helpful.
