I know many of you have treated your FD kitties for IBD with Metronidazole, and I'm wondering about a possible side effect. It may be just a coincidence, but since shortly after Harvey had his first dose, he has been sneezing A LOT. I asked the vet if I should be concerned (but didn't think to ask if it was the med) and she said only if a mucus discharge comes out of his nose. I read up on Metro, and found that sneezing and respiratory issues are an uncommon side effect. Has anyone here ever experienced this? It seems to bother me more than Harvey, but I was just wondering about it. Thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving. Regular condo coming up soon... ;-)

It could be the herpes virus. My Tiffany started rapid sneezing and then her eyes were tearing but it was from her weak immune system when she got sick. I gave her 500mg of l-lysine twice a day mixed in her food and it went away. It also could be a cold. Hugs. I don't think it's from the med.

If it is feline herpes virus, l-lysine, 500 mg per day, may help support the immune system to fight it down.

If the sneezing doesn't go away with l-lysine, see the vet as it may be a treatable bacterial infection. We recently checked one of our cats and it was mycoplasma felis, not herpes. He is doing much better on azithromycin for 4 weeks and has nearly stopped the sneezing attacks.

punkin had metronidazole several times - i never saw any sneezing with it.

There are some side effects that will go away as the body gets used to the meds. I have no idea if this is one of them or not, but thought i'd toss it out there. I took one med that had coughing as a side effect and it drove me nuts at first, but it did resolve as I kept using it.

I'venever had a cat sneeze from metronidazole.....it makes Gracie vomit.

I doubt L Lysine will stop the sneezing. It's more to help the overall symptoms of herpes over the long term.

Sending Harley many vines.

Thanks for the input. Harvey already gets 500 mg of L-lysine a day, although he's missed a number of doses recently when he wasn't eating. Because Cinco is FHV positive, I have tried to keep the others from catching it. I was hoping I could find something else to blame it on, but it may very well be FHV. I'll try to make sure he gets the L-lysine on a regular basis again, and if he's still sneezing next Friday when he goes to UCD I'll ask them about it.
