Tuffy has been taking this for the last few days and she seems right out of it not sure if it is from the kidney failure or might it be from the meds? I will call and ask the vet tomorrow but would love some feed back from anyone that has used it on their furbabies.

Maybe a lower dose or only once a day? Any suggestions? Or is there something better?

She's getting half a pill twice a day...unfortunately she has already had her morning dose

You know me, Jean and Charcoal (GA), since I have posted a lot lately about my Ketchie.

Same thing happened with her, and since the Mirtazapine from the vet's did not seem to be helping her appetite they tried the Cyproheptadine, and my poor Ketchie was totally out of it. Even falling over and she fell off of my bathroom counter a week and a half ago. So, I stopped it altogether and went back to the Mirtazapine.

Thing is, if you use Mirtazapine, make sure it is made my Mylan, a round deep yellow pill, 15 mg. and ask your vet about calling in a prescription to your pharmacist. That worked way better than the generic stuff my vet is using. I might try that yet with Ketchie, even though I know she is on her last leg, but she had that dental last week on Friday, and if I could get some of the original Mirtazapine to try, she might eat some, and at least last a little longer.

Oh, by the way, the Mirtazapine pills are 15 mg. and the vet had on the directions for Gracie (Ketchie's mother), to use a quarter of one of those tablets once every 72 hours. Fortunately, I tried only a sliver of the Mylan brand pill with Ketchie, and within an hour she was eating a lot.

Otherwise, I agree with Larry about giving her a smaller dose and see how that works, of the Cyproheptadine.

Take care!

Thanks Jean. I really hope Ketchie starts to eat for you I know how stressful the position you are in is we have been there and I am hoping against hope that I'm not there yet with my Tuffy girl.

We are all sending good eating thoughts to Ketchie.

The vet did say she had an alternative treatment but that it's a liquid and the only cat that she has given it to started froathing at the mouth :o can't recall the name but it started with an M as soon as she said the froathing at the mouth part I sort of wrote it off!!

So Tuffy hasn't had any of the Cyproheptadine since this morning when she had a 1/2 of one. She is much more alert looking but grouchy as can be...mind you this is closer to her normal personality. I just wish I knew how she felt :?

Well, if Tuffy feels like Ketchie looks, that might not be too good.

I hope I have the nerve to let her go tomorrow morning. She is not eating anything, even with the Mirtazapine. Not drinking much, and I cannot get fluids into her. I think I will just give her a dose of Buprenex soon, to try to make her as comfortable as possible.

Hope Tuffy feels better. Our little furbabies really try to hang on for us, but I think Ketchie's hanging on is coming to an end now.

Take care.
Hugs,

Hugs to you Jean. I've asked myself the same question about Tuffy if she was just hanging on for me....the thought kills me

Hi Jen
I usually have to give Vandow between 1/4 and 1/2 once a day when he needs it. He gets a little rammy after about an hour but it helps with his appetite. None of my cats have ever been out of it after taking cypro. Luckily Vandow's kidney function is normal. Kidney failure kitties can feel pretty bad.
Hugs to you and Tuffy
