Linda and Bear Man
Member Since 2009
With a heavy heart, I am writing on behalf of Lydia (Lydia & Sid & Jake (GA)), who has lost her beloved Sid. Lydia is having problems logging on to FDMB, and she asked me to post the following message. (Note that at the bottom of her post she offers some of Sid's supplies. As she can't log on, she likely won't be able to receive PM's, so if you are interested, send a PM to me, and I will relay it to Lydia). Update Nov. 11: The Contour test strips have been taken.
"Hello everyone,
It is with much sadness and heartbreak that I have to tell you that Sid went to the rainbow bridge a few days ago. We had not been on FDMB for awhile but I remember well all of the support and advice I received when he was in critical condition with DKA and suffering from alternating very high and very low bg readings.
For those of you who don't know his story, he was a cat who was born without eyelids and found in a dumpster. He was rescued by MEOW of Mercer Island, WA and had 3 surgeries to fix his eyes. Then he was taken to Best Friends sanctuary in Utah at 6 years old and lived there for 9 years. And that is where I met him. I adopted him in 2011 when he was 15 years old and brought him back to Michigan. I was told that he had almost no chance of adoption because he peed outside the box. I brought him home and he made friends with my other cats. (Yes, he liked to stand in the litter box to pee, but he never once peed outside the box.)
About 4 months after I brought him home (November 2011), he was diagnosed with diabetes. A month after that he experienced 3 life threatening episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis and spent almost the entire month of January 2012 hospitalized at a specialty veterinary hospital. It turned out that he also had small cell lymphoma in his stomach, IBD, chronic renal failure, a kidney infection and pneumonia.
He had a feeding tube installed, began his chemotherapy, and spent several weeks on antibiotics. His health improved he went on to survive for almost 20 months even though, at the time, I was told he only had a couple of months to live.
He did not mind his daily glucose checks or taking his pills (in a treat) or getting his insulin injections. He braved all of it like a little champ. He did not like his fluids but never once fought me or struggled. He loved his furry brothers and sisters, Ben, Eliot, Daphne, and Chloe. he was a very small little guy and only weighed about 6 pounds, but he loved to wrestle with Ben who is twice Sid's size. He also loved to be groomed by Chloe. He loved his chin scratched and to chirp at me when I talked to him. At mealtimes, he would sit in front of his food dish and wait for me.
Even though he was not with me for long - 2 years is not long - I loved him with all of my heart. He was the most special little boy and my life will not be the same without him.
In Sid's honor, I would like to give his remaining boxes of glucose strips to someone who needs it. I have 3 boxes of 50 bayer contour strips, one open container of contour strips (just opened - almost full) his glucometer, a box of ketone test strips and a ketone meter. Send me a message if you can use these items."
