With a heavy heart, I am writing on behalf of Lydia (Lydia & Sid & Jake (GA)), who has lost her beloved Sid. Lydia is having problems logging on to FDMB, and she asked me to post the following message. (Note that at the bottom of her post she offers some of Sid's supplies. As she can't log on, she likely won't be able to receive PM's, so if you are interested, send a PM to me, and I will relay it to Lydia). Update Nov. 11: The Contour test strips have been taken.

"Hello everyone,

It is with much sadness and heartbreak that I have to tell you that Sid went to the rainbow bridge a few days ago. We had not been on FDMB for awhile but I remember well all of the support and advice I received when he was in critical condition with DKA and suffering from alternating very high and very low bg readings.

For those of you who don't know his story, he was a cat who was born without eyelids and found in a dumpster. He was rescued by MEOW of Mercer Island, WA and had 3 surgeries to fix his eyes. Then he was taken to Best Friends sanctuary in Utah at 6 years old and lived there for 9 years. And that is where I met him. I adopted him in 2011 when he was 15 years old and brought him back to Michigan. I was told that he had almost no chance of adoption because he peed outside the box. I brought him home and he made friends with my other cats. (Yes, he liked to stand in the litter box to pee, but he never once peed outside the box.)

About 4 months after I brought him home (November 2011), he was diagnosed with diabetes. A month after that he experienced 3 life threatening episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis and spent almost the entire month of January 2012 hospitalized at a specialty veterinary hospital. It turned out that he also had small cell lymphoma in his stomach, IBD, chronic renal failure, a kidney infection and pneumonia.

He had a feeding tube installed, began his chemotherapy, and spent several weeks on antibiotics. His health improved he went on to survive for almost 20 months even though, at the time, I was told he only had a couple of months to live.

He did not mind his daily glucose checks or taking his pills (in a treat) or getting his insulin injections. He braved all of it like a little champ. He did not like his fluids but never once fought me or struggled. He loved his furry brothers and sisters, Ben, Eliot, Daphne, and Chloe. he was a very small little guy and only weighed about 6 pounds, but he loved to wrestle with Ben who is twice Sid's size. He also loved to be groomed by Chloe. He loved his chin scratched and to chirp at me when I talked to him. At mealtimes, he would sit in front of his food dish and wait for me.

Even though he was not with me for long - 2 years is not long - I loved him with all of my heart. He was the most special little boy and my life will not be the same without him.

In Sid's honor, I would like to give his remaining boxes of glucose strips to someone who needs it. I have 3 boxes of 50 bayer contour strips, one open container of contour strips (just opened - almost full) his glucometer, a box of ketone test strips and a ketone meter. Send me a message if you can use these items."

((((Lydia)))) I've read your post several times (here and on FB) and each time I think what a lucky guy Sid was to have found you. And two years is not nearly long enough.

Linda,
Thank you for posting this.

((((Lydia)))),
My heart goes out to you. I remember the nightmares that you and Sid went through early last year. And I wanted you to know that all you did for him, and the fact that both you and he refused to give up the fight provided me with true inspiration. You are a very special person. And you gave Sid the priceless gift of two years of unconditional love.

Sweet Sid, fly free and high. You will be missed dearly.

Carl

((((((((((Lydia)))))))))) Sid was a very lucky kitty to have his last 2 years w/ such a loving bean. 2 years is such a short time to us, but you packed those 2 years w/ more love than he had in his entire life.

Fly Free, little Sid!

Linda, thanks for posting this for us.

Linda, thanks very much for sharing Sid's story.

(((Lydia))),

My heart goes out to you. What a heroic cat - it really humbles me to read his story. I can tell how much he was loved and what an amazing Teacher he was. Tho' his time was brief, his life was full - thank you for giving him a loving home and so much care. That love transcends all.

Fly free sweet Sid & land softly wings_cat

I'm so sorry for you loss. What an amazing blessing you were to adopt Sid. He certainly waited a long time for his forever home and made a long journey to get to you.

I just ordered a ketone meter or I would have taken the one you most kindly are offering. Surely someone would love to honor Sids memory and accept his loving gifts.

Most of you who are active in LL won't know Sid or another one of Lydia's sugar kitties, Jake. Not only are these kitties very special, so is Lydia. Whenever a kitty crosses the Bridge, someone always points out that no matter how long that kitty has been with us, it is never enough time. Lydia adopts senior cats. Often, like with Sid, these are cats that no one else seems to see as beautiful or adoptable. Lydia opens her heart and her home to these very special cats who often have very special needs and who will not have a decade or so to spend with her.

I often post a tale of why we choose tears when someone's cat crosses the Bridge. It seems more than fitting for Lydia and Sid.

My heart goes out to you Lydia and I hope that Sid sends you a sign that he has reached the other side of the Bridge safely and is there having a rollicking good time with Jake and our other kitties who are there waiting to be reunited with those they love best.

Lydia, I am so so sorry fr your Loss. I remember Jake, I remember Sid. And I especially remember you, the one that took care of those kitties that most viewed as not adoptable: the seniors, the sick ones. SId was so lucky to have had you, for two very special glorious years. You packed a lifetime into to very special years. I hope your memories will be good ones, and will be of comfort to you. Fly free Sid. We will remember you.

Sid knew such love in those two years...such a beautiful and inspirational story. Our prayers are with you, now and always.

Lydia,

I am so sorry to hear of Sid's passing. His story is certainly unique (what a tough time that little kitty had been through). He was lucky to have a bean like you who stood by his side through his toughest times. That's what love is. At least now he's in a place of no illness, no suffering and surrounded by his little kitty buddies wings_cat

Sincerely,

Brigitte

What a wonderful gift you give to those older kitties! You obviously have a very generous heart to take this furbabys in knowing your time won't be long.
They are so lucky to be with you and it sounds like Sid knew he had his forever home.
I hope to be able to do that myself for a few kitties when my girl's time comes.
I'm so sorry that you've had to say so long to Sid. I believe you will be with him again.

(((((Lydia)))))
I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss and to thank you for all you have done for these special kitties.
It really takes someone special to do what you do. You truly are an inspiration.
Fly free and land softly sweet Sid ♥

Bless your heart for giving so much love to Sid who had such a rough life from the get go! Fly free of all your ailments, lil one. Come back to visit your Mamabean when you have found your way.

oh, Lydia - I'm so sorry to hear about Sid. How fortunate he was to have found a loving home. No, two years isn't nearly long enough. I love this quote from "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" - "We breathe. We pulse. We regenerate. Our hearts beat. Our minds create. Our souls ingest. 37 seconds, well used, is a lifetime."

Prayers and Hugs -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Sid's story always amazed me....all he went through to get to YOU, the one who loves him the most and took care of him as no other would have. I am very, very sorry for your loss but know that Sid knew how lucky he was to have someone love him, care for him, stand by him.

Gentle Journey, sweet Sid.
