i am sorry for all you have been through. Mannie and I send snowflakes, healing vines and even more positive thoughts. we will be thinking of you and Payne.

I would also recommend the newbie kit offered here on FDMB (look for it in the announcement section of lantus), it has supplies and a wonderful tool for checking BG's.
It helped us tremedously.
We are praying for a speedy recover for payne. You have been thru a lot. It indicates you guys are strong fighters. Dont give up.

The fPLI test for pancreatitis isn't 100% accurate. Squishy had it done when he was in the ER and the results came back normal. The necropsy showed that he did in fact have it, along with other things that contributed to his rapid decline :cry:

Georgia and Simon recently had that test (similar results to yours) and she asked for the specific pancreatits test for cats (spec fPLI) and it came back normal. I would order this for peace of mind. Like Cheryl said it isn't 100% but the other test wasn't very meaningful.

The vet tried to have that talk with me about Maverick also and I wouldn't have it. Found the feline assisted feeding forum on Yahoo and they helped us through his recovery. Its so hard, but you know Payne best. Sending hugs.

Finally, home tomorrow, maybe a diagnosis ..... pancreatitis. The new vet believes she has it and that attacks are setting of the ketones, DKA. I don't know what to believe. She still has ketones ohmygod_smile so I didn't bring her home today. I guess now I need to learn all about pancreatitis ..... you know what they say about learning new things so you won't forget things in the future :) I want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers, Payne and I have been very grateful recipients.

Great news about getting Payne home. Please be sure they talk to you about giving her fluids, buprenex for pain, and also pepcid AC (not pepcid complete or any other pepcid...just original 10 mg pepcid AC....can give 1/4 tablet EOD to start with and then up to every day). Hope she is comfy when she gets home and eats well.

Well, to start you off on your education, I'm providing a few links. FWIW, when Gabby was diagnosed, she had DKA, pancreatitis, and hepatic lipidosis. There are a number of cats here who suffer from pancreatitis.

I'm glad Payne is going to come home. Sending tons of prayers and healing vines for your girl. My Cecil had Pancreatitis, but he didn't have bad flare ups and never had ketones. You'll be able to find a lot of information just on the FDMB, seems like it's a common issue for diabetic cats.

Finally, she is home! AND looking really, really good! She kept trying to get out of the exam room while the vet was going over everything :)

We had 19 weeks of not going DKA before this episode and at this point she has totally puzzled the new vet, so we are going back to square one, well square two and start again. Because we need to mix in the R for awhile, we need to go back to ProZinc while she levels off but we will be back .... hopefully there will be no more of this for awile but you can follow us in health while we explore why this keeps happening!! ohmygod_smile

You are a great group and all your support has been outstanding! I will be reading all your suggestions and if anyone has any knowledge as to pancreatitis and ketones, I would love to know. Thanks!

Nancy I'm glad your girl is home! Whatever works for Payne is what you should be using for her. If that combination keeps her BG steady and keeps the pancreatitis under control therefore keeping ketones away(ketones certainly can be brought on by illness or infection without the high BG that you'd normally be looking for)!, then that's what you should do for however long you feel you need to do it. ECID (Each Cat Is Different), and just because so many do so well on Lantus and Levemir here, it may just be that it is not the right thing for Payne...or maybe not right now.

Keep your baby healthy however you have to...I truly would do the same to keep the ketones away.

Glad she's doing so much better, and that you have a plan. Just in case she's still uncomfortable, I'll send eating wishes to her, it's important that she eat.

I left you a bunch of links on pancreatitis in an earlier post.

Here's what I think was going on. Pancreatitis interferes with the pancreas' ability to manufacture insulin. I really think Payne was on too low a dose of Lantus. The inflammation resulting from the pancreatitis coupled with too little insulin triggered the DKA in a cat that we know is prone to ketones.

I do hope you decide to join us again. You have done a fabulous job with Payne. He's lucky to have a bean who's so devoted and who fights as hard as he does.
 
Good luck! I hope that you will return eventually, but you gotta do what is best for Payne. We will miss you.
