Should I worry? Jack's BG went from 110, to 100, to 87

Jack appears normal. He's walking and purring and eating canned low carb food with gusto. But his BG, at +5, was 110. I checked it 25 minutes later, and it was 100. When he's finished eating, I'll check it again. Should I worry?

Added: His BG is now 87 at +6. Should I give him high carb dry or wait longer? He appears to be acting normal (other than being a little annoyed at my frequent ear poking).

Hey, limited experience with feline diabetes, more with humans.
But he´s still in the blue range. I would check again at least every 30 minutes until you see him go up and then another 30 minutes after he starts going up to make sure he keeps going up, then maybe an hour after that. He dropped almost 200 yesterday on one unit and the day before so he might drop a bit more than that on a skinny 1.5. I wouldn´t worry per se, but make sure he has food, monitor and if he starts hitting dark green maybe a HC treat?

Not at all.

100 is a perfectly safe number, and he can go into dark green numbers and that's still just fine. If you checked at +5 he may have not reached his lowest point, so it's not concerning.

Also I think ~10 units is still within measurement error range where even if you tested the same drop of blood with two different strips you might get a similar difference.

He just hit the dark greens, with an 87. I'll check it again soon, and if it's still going down... I may treat him with a little HC dry.

Don´t stress. He is still dark green. Mine went down to light green on sat due to a bit too much insulin. If he has gone further down in 20 minutes a HC treat will probably be enough to take him a bit up. When mine went down to light green then a few drops of honey and little bit of HC treat was enough to push her back up.
I´m not sure of the Nadir point for your cat on Prozinc is but I doubt this isn´t manageable with some carbs if he keeps dropping.

Twenty minutes later and he's 88. I feel relieved because he didn't drop lower. And he seems fine. I'll check again in 30 minutes. Thanks for helping me to relax over this!

My boy went down to 52 this morning (human meter). The first few times this happened, I went right into panic mode. Now I've learned what to expect from him, and not to jump to shove carbs into him because they would just cause his BG to bounce up higher.

Now, since I test so frequently, I know what time to expect his nadir, approximately how low he is likely to go, and I also know that he will almost always head back up again without any intervention and just his usual meals. Not that I would recommend that anyone ignore a low number - but just to encourage folks to test frequently and get to know your cat's normal curves. It becomes a lot less stressful when you know what to expect!

Benny has a busy little spreadsheet!
I'm feeling calmer now. I was just going to check his BG again, and I actually decided not to wake him up.
I'm a little concerned because I can't always check his BG during the day. I work 3-4 days a week, and on those days, he's on his own. But, I think 87 was not too low for him, as he never acted any different.
I appreciate your assuring words.

87 is not too low and if he's holding on his own is a very good thing if he goes a bit lower you may want to give some extra food maybe his regular food or a medium carb one I wouldn't go as far as high carb just yet

Also consider that since he is not used to this low numbers he may bounce a bit so he may be a bit higher than usual at his PM pres shoot is normal

I just fed him his low carb canned. I really didn't want to give him any high carbs. I was torn between being happy to see the low number, and worried that it would keep going down. Thanks for the heads up that it may be a bit higher at PMPS time, because of bouncing. I've got much to learn...

Yes, easy to get alarmed. I read the US government states that all glucometers must report within 20% of the true value. Me, I'd rather have them more accurate, but there you are; they're all the same in this regard, as per consumer reports. Eighty-five is indeed fine. As we go along (M'row diagnosed two months, two days ago; went immediately to Lantus and fancy feast classic), I notice he's getting less and less bouncy re amount of food eaten, amount of water drunk, bg levels and other variables. Bouncier re playfulness!!

I'm happy to hear that M'row is less bouncy these days! The next "green" number won't alarm me like this one did.

We had been giving insulin a few days before we got the meter, and we knew practically nothing. We’d just found felinediabetes.com, but hadn’t yet found this forum. Anyway, long story short - the very first test I did, Benny’s BG was 57. I had to test myself to make sure I was doing it right, and boy, did I go into a panic!

We made the dose adjustment and have come a long way since then, but yeah - I get it!
