Hi Everyone! I'm inquiring about my cat, Murphy. He was first diagnosed with Feline Diabetes in October, 2009. His Vet put him on Lantus. I was instructed by his Vet to gently "Roll" the vial of Lantus between my hands before each use. Within 6 weeks he was in remission. Sadly, in August, 2010 he was again diagnosed and was put back on Lantus. When I was picking up the Lantus at my Pharmacy, the Pharmacist told me not to "Roll" the Lantus, that it wasn't necessary with this type of Insulin and that it could, in fact, alter the potency of it. It's been almost a year now since Murphy was re-diagnosed and I'm wondering if I should have been rolling the vial all of this time like I did the first time with the possibility of him going into remission again. I'm at a loss!!!! Can you steer me in the right direction!!! Thanks so much, Terry and Murphy.

Nope....vet is wrong. You roll/gently mix PZI and some others, but not Lantus nor Levimir.

See our Lantus Support group, here:

In particular, read the sticky on handling and storage.

Then, EDUCATE YOUR VET !!!!
Some of his diabetic kitties will be getting in-effective insulin if they follow his instructions.

Your pharmacist is right - do not roll your lantus vial. It is not in a suspension like the previous insulins your vet is used to (prozinc, vetsulin, for example). There is no need to mix it prior to drawing out your dose. Lantus is on the fragile side, so the less jostling you can do, the better.

Thanks everyone!!! I just picked up a new vial of Lantus at the Pharmacy today - didn't roll it and definitely will not!! I thank God for this Message Board!! :o) You have all be a help to me since day 1, Many Thanks from myself and Murphy!! :-D
