Hey all. Well, I screwed up last night getting home late and other stuff and - Skunky's PM shot was 3 hours late :-(
How can I get back to where I want to be? I was thinking. . . move it up a half hour each shot maybe?

Right now we are on 1/2 unit and I am going to increase the dose on Sunday to 1 unit. That's the plan, anyway. I was thinking, with the low dose that isn't really working, maybe it wouldn't matter if the shot was early. But I don't want to shoot early once I increase so, whatever I'm at Saturday night is where I will be Sunday morning. Right?
Grrr.

I may have to give today's shot one hour early. Which would be very soon.

Thoughts?
thanks

Well you can do it a couple of ways. Either roll back 30 minutes once a day or 15 minutes each shot or completely skip one shot (yes he'll go high by next preshot) then start back at the correct time.

Secondly dose raises are done in .25u increments and are based on the lowest point in the cycle or nadir not preshot values.

Thanks Mel! I have a few follow up questions.

I'm going to do the back it up 30 minutes a day route. Can I continue that even when I increase the dose? Or should I try and hold the times steady for a few days with the increased dose?

2: you're the second person who said I should do 1/4 unit, so I guess that is what I will do. Doubling the dose is a bit scary. I'm terrified of hypos! But I sure do want to get her numbers reasonable, soon. So far, I had a low of 116, once, but other than that, everything has been in the 200s and even 300s (i may have already said that)

How long should I hold the 1/4 unit increase before I can up it another 1/4 unit?

thanks
sarah

You can continue it even with an increase in dose I personally don't because I like to keep the variables down.

It would really help to answer your other questions if I could talk you into setting up a spreadsheet so I could see what you're seeing numberswise. Directions are in the tech support part of this board. Typically a dose is held for 3-5 days before changing but sometimes that turns out to be closer to 5-10 days because there are circumstances that stop the clock like bounces and shed adjustments and just plain different cats dance differently. I have one that takes her sweet time to settle on a dose and one I know within a day or two what he thinks of a change.

You've heard us call this a dance and we have a reason behind it because you literally dance to your own cats music...some will waltz, some will tango, some will fox trot and some will free form and throw you different dance steps every day and the really lucky ones just plain walk off the dance floor and don't take another step.

The best anyone can do is teach you the steps and how to follow your partner's lead but Noodle has to tell you what type of dance and to what music you're dancing to because only he can hear it.

Hi Mel! Based on Skunky's spreadsheet, do you still think I should only increase by 1/4 unit, to 0.75, instead of going on up to 1?

Of course with these crappy syringes who knows what dose we're really getting. yikes!

Yep I sure do. The idea is to slowly get them down into lower numbers so their bodies don't fight the drops. You can jack the dose super fast and yank them down but what usually happens is they turn into a rubber ball. Its kinda simple physics...for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Fast drop equals fast rise.

So you want pink to become yellow, then those yellows to go blue then blue to go green.

Thanks so much!
When we started insuling, I decided to start with the 1/2 unit, instead of 1, because I figured a nice slow gradual decrease would be so much easier on her body than dropping low. So I'll continue the philosophy. Thanks for talking me out of doubling her dose!

I'm using ReliOn 31 gague 1/3 cc syringes with 1/2 unit markings and the 8mm needle.
A friend, whose cat used to be diabetic, sent me her leftovers, which is what I used for the first few days. I liked them, they seem to be much higher quality, individually wrapped, nicer markings, nice long needle. But no half-unit markings, and I wasn't comfortable with estimating the half-unit. So I bought the new ones at Walmart. The markings are crappy and crooked and stuff. Uncool :-(
The nicer ones are CVS brand. If I end up on 1 unit I may switch back to them.

I also seem to get a little air bubble every single stinking time I draw up a shot. After shooting much Lantus into the kitchen sink I decided just not to worry about the bubble.

We're getting her vaccines tomorrow. I was going to look around here and make sure they don't interact with the insulin. Thanks again!
