shopping tips for CAnadians

I just wanted to share a couple of quick notes for my fellow Canadians. After much shopping, I have found that London Drugs carry the BD II syringes that have the 0.5 markings, but its a short needle.

The new Target stores seem to have the best price on testing strips so far. For the One Touch, I can get 100 strips for $74.00, where every other store was 84 or higher. I still have to check Walmart and Costco to see what their price is.

Dehydrated chicken and turkey for treats.... dont buy the packages for cats. Go to the Dog section, and buy the bigger packages meant for dogs. Same exact product, just slightly bigger pieces. Much cheaper per ounce.

Safeway quite frequently has sales on the OneTouch strips if other Canadians are using them. At least here, I don't know if the prices are the same in every province, but in MB they will have a sale of $56 per 100 strips, household limit usually 3 or 4 at that price. The sales rotate between different brands but they're all more or less the same price.

Personally I find a cross-border shopping trip to really stock up comes out to be way cheaper in the long run . . . but at least Lantus is cheaper up here

I got 5 Levemir cartridges at Costco for $120 and they have the needles with half unit marks as well.

I find the BD ultra fine 2 short needle syringes at Walmart, Shoppers, Costco and even Sobeys. Sometimes diabetesexpress.ca

I buy my Bayer contour strips on ebay.. If I shop now instead of auction I can get 100 strips for $45 including shipping from reputable vendors from the US. If I have patience to auction can be even cheaper. Sometimes comes with a free meter or lancets.

I buy the big bags of pure snacks dog size from Walmart and break them into pieces. 140g bag of freeze chicken is under $11.

I get fancy feast from wherever is having a sale - usually either Walmart, petsmart or petvalu - i never pay over 60c if I can help it. Currently petsmart is 58c.

I buy my Lantus for $104 for 5 pens at Costco. Cheapest I have found although another member told me the Great Canadian superstore was cheaper.

Cheapest source I found for the BD syringes is Canadian Superstore. And I found Lantus 5 pack for just under $100 there too. I haven't found any price difference in Levemir so far - same price as Norma reported above at stores where I've asked. London Drugs also occasionally has test strips on sale. I once bought a bunch of Bayer Contour ones there for 33% off. But like Amy says - best price on strips is across the border.
